Running head: MY BUSINESS VENTURE My Business Venture Alysia Leverette Professor: Ali Said Course: FIN 317 Financing Entrepreneurship July 13, 2018 1 MY BUSINESS VENTURE 2 My Business Venture The meat industry is a wide area that involves the rearing, slaughtering, processing, packaging, and distribution of livestock such as cows, pigs, and poultry among others. The venture I would like of venture in to is the poultry industry. The venture is poultry butchery. This butchery will be a specialty butchery dealing exclusively with poultry and poultry products. According to the United States Department of Agriculture (2018), in the United States, the value of poultry meat sold stood at $42.7 billion in 2017. The value of eggs alone stood at $7.55 billion. This statistic proves the immense opportunity available in the poultry industry. The business venture will be located in Kentucky. Poultry is the number one agricultural commodity in Kentucky. As such, it is the most available commodity. Additionally, it is the number one export for the state. The butchery will mainly deal with the export of poultry and poultry products and have its base in Kentucky. The major competition in the area is the big poultry processing factories that export directly to customers. However, they deal with largescale buyers. My poultry venture will aim to satisfy the small-scale purchasers such as drive-ins, diners, hotels, caterers, homes for special needs people, small-scale schools, and other individual customers. This business is of particular interest to me because I have some experience working in the meat industry. Over my holidays, I have on several occasions volunteered to work at my Uncle’s butchery. I have gained valuable experience in the running of butchery. This business will be successful because there is a niche market that is readily available. Second, the poultry industry is huge in America. The venture is not a heavy capital investment as the bulk of the MY BUSINESS VENTURE 3 machinery is refrigerators and meat cutters which can easily be purchased as second-hand items to reduce the cost of investment.
