Functionalist theory.
Functionalist perspective originates from Emile Durkheim who was interested in society
remaining relatively stable and the existence of the social order. As such, the theory concentrates
on the social structure and how part of the society influences stability in the whole society
rudimentary to core institutions of the economy, education, religion, family, and government. To
accomplish this, the theory argues that social stratification prevails in all societies and its
hierarchical pattern is inevitable and desirable. This would also mean that income occupational
differences are justifiable based on differences in economic importance and fair compensation of
different jobs. Functionalists argue that administrators, managers, and capitalists firms are fairly
rewarded financially since their work contributes to the stability of society, hence functionally
vital. However, functionalism has various criticisms for its negative implications on fair
