HUMANISTIC APPROACHES TO PERSONALITY
Introduction
According to psychologists, the epitome of human psychological and physiological
realization is self-actualization. Almost all scholarly writings of the same try to explain the
routes and methodology that can be used to achieve this feat of human existence. Selfactualization portrays a healthy and productive mind, which is the desire of most people. The
two main theories exploring the road to self-actualization are the Maslow’s hierarchy of needs
theory and the person-centered theory.

The similarities
The two approaches show the response of individuals to their psychological and
emotional environment. These secondary factors may be used to facilitate the realization or
disintegration of self-actualization within an individual.
The two theories focus on one primary objective, self-actualization. They both are in
unison with the silent universal fact of human personality development, the highest feat human
personality can reach is the self-actualization.
The two theories also marry, to some extent on the emotional combinations that may be
used to achieve the said feat. They both agree that the road to self-actualization is through
affection and building self-esteem and self-worth. Achieving Self-actualization without the
absence of the same is impossible.
The differences
The Maslow’s hierarchy of needs poses a clear-cut authority of requirements that need to
satisfy the ultimate self-actualization needs of an individual. The five essential needs that should
be subsequently satisfied (physiological needs, safety, a sense of belonging, esteem and finally

self-actualization) (MASLOW, 1943) are somewhat intricate, as compared to the personcentered theory which only focuses on a guided approach to realizing self-potential and
subsequently self-actualization.
The person-centered theory also focuses on self-concept (the collection of experiences
and beliefs about oneself like physical and mental capabilities, appearances, weaknesses, and
strength) ("Person–Centered Therapy (Rogerian Therapy)", 2018). In contrast, the Maslow’s
hierarchy of needs only references the influence of the environment on a person. It is central to
the conditional fulfillment of the said needs as the ultimate path to self-actualization. Attention
given to the individual’s awareness of their potential and capabilities is very minimal.
