The Evolution of Mental Illness Treatment
Event 1: Trephination pre-history
One of the earliest forms of mental illness treatment, this method involved the removal of
a small part of the skull using a saw, bore or drill. The practice dates back almost 7,000 years.
There was little knowledge about the causes of mental illness. The use of this method was as a
means of relieving migraines and even curing mental illnesses. There was the perception that
these illnesses disease resulted from demonic possession (Foerschner).
Event 2: Rituals in Ancient Times
After organized religion and religious practices were established during the ancient times
(Mesopotamian era, around 6th Century BC), there was the incorporation of a less violent
approach in dealing with mental illness. People still generally believed demonic possession as
the main the cause of mental disorders, although more subtle activities such as prayer, exorcism,
atonement and exorcisms were employed. These rituals also involved more progressive ideas of
the time, such as music and dancing, which were particularly incorporated by the Egyptians ("A
