Discussion 7: Emergency situations that may occur during a recovery process

An emergency is described as any situation that causes or has a risk of causing loss of property, loss of human lives and also the damage to the environment. There are various emergencies that can take place during the recovery operations. These includes; Disease outbreaks, injury, fire, depletion of the basic commodities such as the food, water etc., the presence of few personnel to counteract the disaster and also inability to procure the necessary infrastructure i.e. electricity as well as the transportation which is very crucial in the recovery process (Van de Walle, 2008). Putting different measures is the key option in helping the response team in counteracting these emergency situations. During the disaster recovery process disease outbreaks is among the most common emergency especially if there were floods. Floods is a type of disaster and it bring a lot of waterborne disease among many people. These diseases such as cholera requires immediate attention since they may cause death within very few hours or days. The medical team should respond immediately to prevent further spread of the diseases through the management of the diseases and putting preventive measures.

Injury is also another emergency especially to the responding team. The team members may have different injuries i.e. in case there was a fire the team may suffer from inhalation injuries as they try to put off the fire. The inhalation injuries are caused by inspiration of very hot air into the lungs which causes injury to the tissues. Immediate medical attention is needed so as to rescue the individual. Overwhelmed personnel by the disaster is another major emergency situation whereby the unit commander is required to request for more personnel to help in mitigating the effects of the disaster. Adequate resources and personnel are important in the disaster recovery.

DISCUSSION 8: Describe one to two different kinds of tests that can be performed for the Disaster Recovery Plan.

Like there are different types of disasters such as (natural and human-made), there also exist different types of disaster plan testing that range from the simple ones to those that are more involving and expensive. Before doing the testing, it is essential to have a disaster recovery checklist that will help in the identification of every item.

Disaster recovery tabletop test

This test is put in place as an extension added to the walk-through test. The test is done in order to see the working of the plan in real-world circumstances. The gaps in this testing can be revealed by subjecting stress to the team and forcing them to discuss what would be done in certain disaster circumstances(Edwards & Cooper, (2015). One the scenario to be tested is thrown to the testing staff; there will be the possibility of the plan to allow for different circumstances and situations that are unexpected. In the course of testing, the mock scenarios might range from simple to actual simulated situations.

As an alternative to the testing, one can come up with curveballs such as a backup failure or a faulty generator. As a test for the plan, it will involve seeing what will happen in case the things do not do according to the plan.

Disaster recovery technical test

The test involves no conference meeting in the rooms. The test involves a real-life situation. Through this test, it will be possible to find the systems that can be recovered according to the written plan (Cooper & Edwards, 2017). The test involves two levels that are the parallel and the live level. Parallel testing will involve backing up the system that is running parallel to the production system. Live testing will involve an actual downing of the central system with an attempt to recover.
