Food security in America: Statistical background

Statistics indicate that food insecurity is a major issue in modern America. One in
eight Americans faces food insecurity (USDA). The population of the United States is at 320
million people. Therefore around 42 million people suffer from food insecurity. It is worth
assessing the interpretation of the terms “food security” to understand the nature of the
challenge. The United States Department of Agriculture indicates that food insecurity
includes circumstances where the people have insufficient food to cater to healthy and active
living.
There are two underlying causes of the global food shortage. On the one hand, there is
the growing population which increases the pressure on land and other resources to increase
the food production (Coleman-Jensen, Gregory & Singh, 2014). On the other hand, poverty
represents the other end of the complex issue. It reflects the fact that the poor people do not
have enough resources to buy diverse food products. Thus, they only buy what can sustain
them at best.
The difference between hunger and food insecurity
It is worth noting that all cases of lack of an adequate amount of food for consumption
amount to food insecurity (West et al., 2014). Thus, starvation during the times of a drought
reflects food insecurity. However, it is untrue to argue that all forms of food insecurity
amount to hunger. Food insecurity occurs when one fails to have the capacity to afford and
access the requisite food products that are necessary for healthy living.

The justification of the use of science to improve food production
The aim of improving the global food in production is to ensure that the people all
over the world enough food (Coleman-Jensen, Gregory & Singh, 2014). The diversity of the
bodily demands should reflect the diversity in the production of the food across the globe.
The use of genetic science to improve the food produced by crops has emerged as one of the
leading ways of enhancing food security in the world.
There is a need for the world to apply genetic modification to improve food
production and thus attain food security (Coleman-Jensen, Gregory & Singh, 2014). On the
one hand, the global population is rising. On the other hand, the climate is increasingly
becoming hostile, and the pests are becoming more deadly. The combination of these factors
indicates that the overall food production shall decrease. At the same time, the consumers are
increasing at a very fast rate. Thus, it is inevitable that the price of the food crops is growing
rapidly.
The introduction of the genetic modification science in crops has one main objective;
improving the quantity and the quality of the food produced on our farms (Atkins & Bowler,
2016). The science allows for genetic alteration of the plants to enhance the superior genes
that produce more crops. At the same time, the plants improve their resistance to pathogens
and pests. There are additional genetic modifications that enhance drought resistance capacity
in crops. All these aspects improve the overall production and quality of food in line with the
need for meeting the modern-era food security needs in the world.
The health aspects related to the use of the genetically modified foods
Genetic modification of crops, as in any other case of genetic modification, requires
great expertise and accurate professional research. Such aspects require significant financial
investments on the one hand and significant international persuasion capacity on the other
