Tobacco is a plant native to the Americas both North and South. It is in the Solanaceae
family in which it shares with other plants like pepper, potato, and nightshade. Nightshade
contains an alkaloid that is poisonous to human and animals. Tobacco does not contain alkaloids
that are poisonous to humans but they contain nicotine. Nicotine is a neurotoxin for insects and
because of this, it has been used as an insecticide in the past. To humans, however, nicotine does
kill but it has life-long effects such as cancer (Vickery, 2016).
The seeds of tobacco are very tiny and light in weight. One sample weighing one gram
contains up to ten thousand tobacco seeds. These seeds are native to the Americas and it is
believed that they started growing there around 6000BC. The native American-Indians had been
growing and using tobacco from as early 1BC. They used it in religious functions and for
medicinal purposes. For medicine, they used it as a painkiller and for dressing wounds. They also
