North Korea over the years has been on the receiving end of international lending from
major lending institutions of the world. The lending over the years has been for several reasons
i.e. to acquire funds for assisting in helping North Koreans displaced by floods, rebuilding from
the war and boost economic growth. The biggest benefactors of North Korea were the Soviet Union
and China who supported the economy of North Korea especially after the Korean war (Kim,
2014). North Korea suffered from the collapse of the Soviet Union because funding and assistance
was cut off. China on the other hand, reduced its assistance to North Korea over the years. Haggard
and Noland (2012), estimate that the 1990’s famine caused one million deaths, approximately five
percent of the North Korean population. All these factors coupled with ineffective economic
policies and a number of natural disasters contributed to major economic issues in North Korea,
which fueled its bid to get assistance from International lending institutions. Particularly, the
humanitarian agencies from around the world have been offering assistance...
