CULTURAL COMPETENCE IN HEALTH CARE PRACTICE
Cultural competence is the capacity for people practicing nursing to deliver effective and proper
health care services which meet the social and cultural needs of the patients. Cultural competent
in the nursing practice is essential for the nurses who work in stressful healthcare areas or
environments. Nurses who provide acute care should develop cultural competence to enable
them to build a proper relationship with their patients, giving them the opportunity to get access
and to find a way in which they could implement the nursing practices to meet the patients’ need
(Giger, J. N. 2016).
Through cultural competence, the nurses could support the right decision made by their patients
or a family member of the patient. Cultural competence in nursing practice is mainly delivered to
the patient once there is an evident understanding of the diverse cultural background of the
patient by the nurse.
One of the benefits of cultural competence is that a cultural competence- a patient who gains
respect and a positive attitude towards the health care provider on how he respects his language,
