Consider the different communities to which you belong:
1. What is the geopolitical community in which a person would live? Why is it geopolitical?

Maurer and Smith (2013) define a geopolitical community as “a spatial designation—a geographic or geopolitical area or place.” (p. 395) This can be illustrated by looking at the natural or man-made boundaries in which people live in. Man-made boundaries could be the towns where we live, work, or go to school. Natural boundaries could be the land formations that separate and isolate groups of people (Maurer & Smith 2013). In the community where I live, natural boundaries are not well defined. The boundaries between the coastal California and the central valley is divided by mountains in between, but each county from southern all the way to northern CA is mostly divided by man-made boundaries.

2. What is a phenomenological community to which a person can belong? Why is it a phenomenological community?

Maurer and Smith (2013) define a phenomenological community as “a relational rather than a spatial designation.” (p. 395) Thus, a community in which a common interest is present and therefore would facilitate a sense of membership and belongingness. I am an active volunteer of American Red Cross since 2005. Community volunteers come together with the same common interest, and that is to help other people need. This is an example of phenomenological community.

3. What would some challenges and benefits be for community health nurses in providing care for different communities? For similar communities? For the same community? What are some possible solutions to the challenges?

Cultural diversity is a huge challenge for public health nurses and can present many difficulties in providing quality nursing care and in achieving optimal health outcomes to our pts. Pt's different cultural beliefs in terms of how they view illness might interfere with the treatment plan for the pt. Pt's with linguistic barrier may not fully understand instructions and not follow medical regimen appropriately. This is a common challenge whether you are providing care in your own community or elsewhere. Nurses should continue to develop their skills in practicing cultural self-awareness so they can better recognize their own cultural and linguistic assumptions and biases. The benefit of a PHN is being able to make a difference in the community, being able to connect people to the services and resources they need – that could either be medical care, food, shelter, or mental health.

4.) What, if any, global health issues are present in your community? Are there any ethnic subcommunities within your community? What considerations need to be addressed?

In my community the global health issue that is present is obesity and it continues to be on the rise. My community is filled with beautiful homes and middle-class people that have children are never outside playing. Our children are inside playing video games, using their cell phones and chatting with other children via these devices. When I was a child we were outside all day playing, quitting only because our parents said it was time to come inside. Now children sit most of the day, and they eat fast foods in the interest of time.

There are no subcommunities in my community, we have a very diverse community here in Green Briar Woods. We need to address community sports, education and resources for children of all ages to provide a safe and fun place for children to be active.
