Introduction
Development of social media and internet technology have improved the means and
possibilities of obtaining relevant information on diseases and patient information. Patients are
becoming more informed and want to be more engaged in their healthcare treatment. Through the use
of smartphones, social media users are more able to create media content individually or in the
community with others. Patients are able to obtain the relevant information and take care of their
health issues. Social media platforms are now supporting the health processes, bring people together,
sharing information, enabling communication regarding health topics, and in this way support patient
empowerment.
Due to the dynamic nature of the internet patient with long-term conditions are now putting
personal health information on the social media including, blogs, public domains, discussion boards, and
virtual environment (Ventola, 2014).
The first issue is with regard to patient consent. These issues have been largely ignored. In some
cases, electronic file may be required in order to obtain healthcare. For acceptance of this files, some
conditions must be met. Among this being outline of the patient’s right to privacy and secrecy.
Reference to legal requirements in case of access to personal medical data, in what form and when is
