After the Terrorists attack the US, the Patriot Act was enacted by the government under
the leadership of President Bush. The act aimed to provide the American security personnel with
the right tools to intercept and obstruct terrorism and punish terrorist act in the country and
worldwide. The Act gives law enforcement personnel the right to get personal records of
individuals such as telephone, email and financial records among others. It also allows
intelligence gathering in American soil, enlarges the secretary of Treasury to check on financial
transactions especially those that involve foreigners. The Patriot Act encounters criticism
because it inhibits civil liberty rights and authorizes the illegal detention of suspects especially
immigrants making some of its provisions to get declared by federal courts as unconstitutional.
