Pre-school themes and lesson plans are usually composed of early childhood activities for
toddlers, preschoolers as well as kindergarten kids. The lesson plans or rather themes
includes a list of easy-to-follow instructions, crafts, printable activities, materials needed,
coloring pages, related resources, among others. Thematic approach of teaching contains
scientific learning, problem-based learning and project-based learning. Students usually
have learning activities presented under selected themes. Teachers to provide students
with challenges in order for them to reflect on a theme.
Though a good way of teaching, planning the lessons based on the themes can have
several drawbacks especially for early childhood kids. The first challenge is the lack of
content. Some themes lack subject content and can quickly lose structure and coherence.
Some themes e.g. mushroom theme does not in itself make natural and coherent links
across the curriculum. The theme also doesn’t interest most students unlike other themes
which involve for example making mummies or exploring tombs. Students’ needs, in
regards to the content of the curriculum, take second place, as the teacher is forced to
spend their time and energy creating activities that are linked to the subject of the theme,
rather than concentrating on making the activities meaningful, coherent, and relevant.
