In California alone there are 45,000 people suffering this injustice. They are there – mostly on nonviolent, low-level charges simply because they cannot afford bail. The money bail system criminalizes poverty - if bail is set at $5,000, a wealthy person can simply pay it and buy their freedom, while a poor person sits in jail because they cannot afford that sum of money. Even when people scrape together enough money to pay bail, it is often taking away from other necessities, such as paying rent or buying food.
