SOC 101 Glendale Community College Dominant Culture in The United States Discussion
Part I: Choose one discussion prompt from the options below, and then respond to the question(s) within it as your initial post on this forum. If there's a prompt that you notice hasn't yet been selected by our peers, I encourage you to consider selecting it, in hopes to enrich our discussion about Culture even further. Be sure to start your response by letting us know which prompt you chose to explore (for example, you can indicate the number, such as #3) and then proceed to respond to all parts of the question you selected. Culture is an important aspect of society because accurate awareness of cultural scripts can give an inhabitant of a society the ability to navigate social situations more easily. Imagine you were tasked with welcoming new inhabitants to your city. What would they need to know? What might they be expected to eat? What might they be expected to do for fun? How might they be expected to transport themselves around town? Who might they need to avoid, and who might they need to turn to in cases of emergency?Describe a subculture to which you belong. What norms, values, and artifacts distinguish it from the dominant culture? How does belonging to this subculture influence your life?Think about the dominant culture in the United States. What are some of the dominant norms, values, and artifacts that encourage or discourage political participation by Americans? That encourage or discourage equitable views on race, gender, sexuality, nationality, various religions, ethnicity, and so forth? How much food do you think is wasted at Glendale Community College, including all of the cafeterias (or other places you frequented pre-COVID 19)? What value(s) does it represent in our culture that food waste is accepted? What can we do to work with our college cafeteria and the students and others who spend time on campus (or wherever else you selected) to change this culture?
