Peer Review

This discussion is an opportunity to give and receive advice on the preparation of your writing assignment for the following week. You should begin by reviewing carefully the instructions for the assignment "Social Ethics in Action," from the content of Unit 8. Prepare a rough draft of your paper and post it here, where your fellow learners can offer their comments. You do not need to have a complete assignment; just make a start so that others can offer suggestions for revision.

By successfully completing this assignment, you will demonstrate your proficiency in the following course competencies:

      • Explain the ethical basis for the relation of individuals to their governments.
    • Competency 2: Critically examine the contributions of key thinkers from the history of ethics.

Political philosophy is concerned with the formation and maintenance of civil societies. Its central theme is the need to explain the relationship between individual human beings and their governments. Many states require that motorcyclists wear helmets while operating their vehicles. This is not like forbidding the use of cell phones or intoxicants, which might impair the rider and endanger other people on the roads. The helmet laws impose a governmental regulation that can, at most, be held to protect only the individual citizen whose behavior is being restricted. Why should the government be able to tell individuals what to do while riding their own motorcycles?Write a paper assessing these helmet laws in terms of the social contract theory of Thomas Hobbes and Jean-Jacques Rousseau.Consider the following in your paper:
    • Should the government provide security by overcoming the selfish desires of the individual citizen, or should citizens cooperate voluntarily in service of the general welfare of all?
    • What justifies the imposition of governmental authority on individual citizens?
    • Are individuals always obligated to obey the dictates of their government?
    • Which elements of the traditional theories are relevant to this case?
    • Is it unethical for individual citizens to ignore this governmental requirement?
    • You may also wish to apply other conceptions of the basis for social and political order.
Your instructor will provide detailed feedback on this draft, which you can then use to revise your work for the final version, which you will submit by the end of Unit 9.

POLITICAL PHILOSOPHY AND HELMET LAWS

The laws which revolve around the use of motorcycle helmets have been met
with various debates. Majority of the individuals feel that the law is not necessary.
The view of the law has led many of the states to lack a mandatory law which will
require the motorcyclists to wear helmets all the time. The effect of the laws has led
to a significant drop in the overall death rates which are often associated with the
accidents which feature motorcycles. The aim of the regulations which have often
been disregarded is to ensure that public safety is maintained and to ensure that an
individual's life has been saved from a lethal or non-lethal injury and in worst cases,
death. However, despite the aims which show how beneficial the laws are, the
compliance when it comes to the use of a helmet has dropped. Year after year,
some states have tried to repeal the universal laws, which have led to an increase in
the fatalities (Knudson, 2001).
Many ethical questions have been broached with the majority of the
individuals who don't support the helmet laws making arguments that the helmets will
not aid or prevent motorcycle crashes. In their view, the implementation of such laws
is inappropriate since it will not increase public and safety awareness. Further
arguments have been raised which revolve around autonomy and public health.
Autonomy focuses on an individual solely making their own decisions without any
