In chapter 1, page 5 of your text, the author challenges the reader to “touch reality” by
vicariously experiencing a disaster. He suggests that you watch the community meeting
scene (about 4 minutes) in
Dante’s Peak
in which the eruption of a volcano is just
starting.
Go to the following website and respond to the questions below.

As the person in the meeting, how are you feeling? What thoughts are going through
your mind?

Question 1
As the person in the meeting, many thoughts could be crossing my mind. There is the aspect
of social anxiety whereby I will be asking myself the much I can do to help my families and
others. In such a situation, I will be thinking of myself as a hero who is looked upon by
others to save them. However, that comes with anxiety and fear of what will happen next.
The fear of what will happen to others will bother me more especially when it comes to the
young children and the old. It’s a scenario where thousands of thoughts will cross my mind
to try and come up with the best way to save my life and that of my loved ones. No
concentration at all since what the panel is saying at the moment may not seem to help.
Question 2
As a person responsible for another, the thoughts in mind will be how one can do to save
themselves and their loved ones. The feeling of anxiety and fear will occupy my mind. In
such a case, the only thing one would like to save is the lives of others. It's better one to be
hurt but at least make sure no one including their pets dies. The mindset is concerned more
