How to Bleed Your Fuel Line

One of the most common problems of any diesel engines is difficulties in starting
after replenishing an empty fuel tank. This is mainly because of the air bubbles that might get
stuck inside the fuel line. As many diesel car owners, might know, the cost of ‘reviving’ such an
engine can be expensive. What many diesel car owners might not know, the remedy for the same
(bleeding) is very simple and requires very little knowledge about cars.
Equipment and Supplies Required

Fuel (full tank capacity)

Spanners

10-15 Quick absorbing rags

Manufacturer’s manual

Note: The wrenches should be the same size as the fittings on your fuel line. The
collection should be as vast as the number of different sizes of the joints on your fuel line,
although ½, 1 and 1 & a half inch spanners are the most frequently used.
Preparations
1.

Using the manufacturer’s manual, locate the fuel tank, the primary fuel

filter, the lift pump, secondary fuel filter, injector pump and injector nozzles. These are the
central parts of the fuel line and crucial to the bleeding process.
2.

Locate the venting units (breather nuts) of the lift pump, injector pump

and the in-line injector nozzles. These venting units are the primary avenues for expelling the
unwanted air from the fuel line.

3.

3

Wrap the quick absorbing rags around the venting units (breathing

nuts). This is done to collect the excess fuel expelled from the fuel line because of the bleeding
process.
4.

Fill the fuel tank with fuel. Bleeding involves using the flow of fuel in the

system to expel air. You, therefore, need to use as much fuel as possible.
Bleeding the fuel line
After you complete these processes, proceed with the bleeding process as follows:
1.

Slightly open the breather nut on the lift pump.

2.

Using the lever on the fuel pump, operate the lift pump, allowing fuel to

move through it. Keep the breather nut open until the flow from the breather nut is entirely free
from air.
Note: Do not operate the lift pump (via the mechanical lever of the lift p...
