Description

Throughout the course, you have explored and examined human development through the entire human lifespan. Select a human life to use as a case study. This can be the life of someone you know (such as a friend or family member), or someone about whose life you can gather information (such as a scholar, artist, politician, or celebrity). If you prefer, you may select a fictional person, such as an adult character in a book, movie, etc. If you wish to apply your own life as an illustration of human development theory and concepts, choose Option #2, below.

The human life you select will be applied as an illustration of human development theory and concepts.

In an essay 8-10 pages in length, address the following:

  1. Explain how the developmental theories pertaining to physical and cognitive development that are discussed in the textbook and in the course modules are relevant to your character’s progression through the developmental stages. Discuss a minimum of two theories in your analysis.
  2. Explain how each of the eight stages covered in the course has played out in your subject’s life and how they pertain to social aspects and relationships throughout his/her lifespan. (E.g., your subject may not have lived through the later stages of her/his own life but will have experienced those stages among family and social relationships.)
  3. Describe how gender and culture have impacted the human development process for your chosen subject.

Your Portfolio Project will include the following:

  • Cover page in APA format
  • Introduction
  • Body of paper
  • Conclusion
  • Reference list in APA format

Discuss and cite the course textbook and at least three credible or scholarly sources in addition to the course textbook, to support your analysis and positions. Your paper should be 8-10 pages in length, in addition to the cover and reference pages, with document and citation formatting per the APA Requirements.

Lifespan Development

When a child is born, they are affected by various aspects as they develop to become
different personalities when they are compared with others. There are several aspects which have
been identified by scientists which are seen to cause these differences. It is observed that the
influence which individuals have when they are born casts them towards various carriers,
professions, interests or talents (Britto et al., 2017). When a child is born with the experience and
exposure of the parents to such activities such as soccer or tennis, it is apparent that they will
eventually develop an interest in the same filed. The chances of becoming a better athlete in the
same filed, notes scientists, is very high. The situation is not the difference for leaders. While
most influence comes from the parents, it is apparent that personal development usually leads to
an improvement in the desired character (Britto et al., 2017). Several other factors such as the
environment which a person grows in, the society around, the gender as well as the need to have
various forms of freedom such as financial or social liberty lead to the establishment of
techniques for development. The situation is not different for the 44th President of the United
States. The author of this paper will describe how Sigmund Freud’s Theory of Personality and
Erik Erikson’s Theory of Psychosocial Development are relative to the lifespan development of
the immediate former president.
Sigmund Freud is among the most reputable neurologist who is known for the
development of psychoanalysis. Through his theory, he notes that individuals tend to develop
through different stages in life. The most notable aspect of this development is that these
individuals usually have internal conflicts when they undergo the various life stages (Ewen,
2014). It is also through Freud’s theory that we learn that three major aspects of the mind
influence human beings. These include the id, the ego as well as the superego. Through an

analysis of Obama’s life, it is evident that the aspect of id, as discussed by Freud, played a great
role in his life. Id deals with the instant gratification of the physical needs of an individual.
The element of id usually happens subconsiously as individuals strive to become better
people in the society. Freud’s theory implies that individuals will often attempt to become better
and achieve more if and when they come across other people who are more privileged. When
Barrack Obama was growing up, he came across many individuals from different races.
Historians note that some of them were students, politicians while others were influential persons
in the field of the judiciary (Ewen, 2014). We can argue that Obama’s need to develop and
become a better person than he was due to the aspect of the race brought about conflicts in his
mind either consciously or without his consent.
Applying the aspect of Freud’s id would imply that Barrack Obama felt challenged to
develop and become one of the useful people in the society. But this was to start with pers...
