MDC Mary Midgley Trying out One New Sword Primary Argument Discussion
Reading Summaries should be a minimum of 250 words and a maximum of 500 words (approximately 1-2 pages in standard formatting)All reading summaries must follow standard formatting requirements. (That is, standard margins, font size, and paragraph spacing is observed. Students cannot manipulate font size, margins, and paragraph spacing to meet length requirements.)Reading Summaries require that you read a primary source selection from the end of each chapter, then write a short summary that identifies the thesis and outlines the main argument. Reading summaries are not about your opinion or perspective – they are expository essays that explain the content of the reading. All reading summaries must include substantive content based on the students reading of the material. When writing Reading Summaries, you may not quote the author without proper citations. In other words, if you use the exact words of the original author (copy-paste) you MUST do a proper citation. Similarly, if you use any other website (such as Wikipedia, Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy, etc.) you must cite the source. Failure to cite sources properly is in violation of Student Rights and Responsibilities Manual which may result in grade penalties. When in doubt, quote/cite your sources. All quotes, references, and ideas lifted from any source – including internet sources MUST be properly cited in MLA/APA format. All reading summaries must be thoroughly proof-read and checked for spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Students should write in professional, academic prose and use only appropriate language. Spelling and grammar count towards your grade in every assignment. After reading all of Chapter 2, please select ONE of the following primary source readings:“Anthropology and the Abnormal” by Ruth Benedict (starting on page 33)-or-“Trying Out One’s New Sword” by Mary Midgley (starting on page 35)Write a short, objective summary of 250-500 words which summarizes the main ideas being put forward by the author in this selection.

Week 3, Application: Communicating a Message to Multiple Audiences
Week 3 AssignmentApplication: Communicating a Message to Multiple AudiencesReal life is not always tidy, and this fact certainly holds true in
public communications. Audiences have multiple characteristics that can
influence how a message should be delivered. As a criminal justice
professional, you must consider how audience characteristics might
influence how a message should be delivered. You should then consider
challenges to effectively communicating a message to that audience. Perhaps you select to use visual aids for a group of 7th grade
children. You then find out that the children attend an inner-city
school with a low reading level and will not be able to understand your
visual aids. Or perhaps they are Non-English speaking children who
might not be able to read your visual aids. Once you begin to consider
the variety of potential audiences, and their distinct characteristics,
the importance of presenting the same message in several different
formats becomes clear. For this assignment, review your video submission from Week 2. Then
select one audience from the list provided. Consider how that audience
might benefit from the message that was delivered in Week 2. Next,
examine characteristics specific to that audience that may influence
how the message should be delivered. Look at potential challenges in
communicating this message to the selected audience. Finally, consider
how your communication might have to be altered in order to deliver
this same message to the new audience.
