Introduction
The Columbian Exchange is a term commonly used by academicians to refer to the
period in history which was marked by the interchange of trade concepts, populations, food
crops, and diseases between the Eastern Hemisphere and the Western Hemisphere. Notably, the
term was officially applied by Alfred W. Crosby in Environmental History (Crosby, 1995). Also,
it seems vital to clarify that the Old World refers to the regions in the Eastern Hemisphere
including Europe, Africa, and Asia (often termed as the World Island or Afro-Eurasia). On the
other hand, the New World comprises of the Americas and the regions in close proximity. With
that said, one should note that the Columbian Exchange was introduced by Christopher
Columbus’ explorations into the Americas in 1492 (Nunn & Qian, 2010). Like any other
anthropogenic institution, the Columbian Exchange had socio-economic and political
consequences that greatly transformed the world.
