Topic: Respiratory Issues Complicated by Economic Disadvantage

A mother brings her 8-year-old child to the clinic, stating the child “just isn’t breathing right, doesn’t want to play, just lies on the couch — this happens all the time.”

The appearance of both mother and child is disheveled. The child’s wheezing can be heard across the room. When asked if the child is better at any certain time of the day, the mother responds, “It’s like this all the time and has been for the past year — we saw a doctor last year who diagnosed asthma but we don’t have any money for drugs or to come back to the clinic.”

a) Resources Currently Available in California to Support This Family in the Care Of
Asthmatic Child
In the state of California, where I come from, there are organizations both state-owned
and private ones that deal with evaluation, research and treatment of asthma programs geared at
reducing the disease’s burden. According to the California Department of Public Health (2015),
through these programs, health specialists understand causes, methods of prevention and
management of asthma. Through the Strategic Plan for Asthma in California, the eight-year
child and family will get assistance due to the resources made available by California, agencies,
coalitions, and organizations which provide asthma interventions procedures in the state.
Through the initiative of these organizations and agencies assistance will be given courtesy of
California Breathing (CB) program and the California Public Health Department that has a
program that deals with asthma. Due to this program, the child will receive input and guidance
from asthma experts, as well as participate in asthma self-help groups that bring about awareness
across the state. Through the California Public Health Department and California Breathing
(CB) program, the child will receive standard healthcare that will allow proper management of
the disease in conjunction with California’s private, public, and community-based health care
delivery systems.
Also, through the above systems, the child and the family gain knowledge in various
ways the child will live a healthy life even though it has asthma. Ill...
