While volcanic activity may be more difficult to forecast than earthquakes, scientists can still forecast eruptions. By monitoring unique pre-eruption events such as changes in seismic activity, changes in structure/geography and increased gas releases. Mt Kilauea on Hawaii's main island has been erupting almost continuously since 1983. However this year there has been a marked increase in activity which has been termed the lower Puna eruption. Using datasets from NASA (SO2 emissions), the USGS (surface deformation and earthquakes) and the Nevada Geodetic Laboratory (surface deformation), You are to estimate the commencement date of the lower Puna eruptions. Satellite SO2 data from NASA https://so2.gsfc.nasa.gov/pix/daily/1217/hawaii_1217p.html Earthquake Data attached GPS Data http://geodesy.unr.edu/NGLStationPages/GlobalStationList Search and download data for at least two of PUOC, JCUZ, UWEV, CRIM, JOKA You can choose either NA 12 or IGS08 these are reference frames for geodetic studies. NA12 is specifically designed for North America, while IGS108 is an international reference frame. As we are working with American data, we can safely use either just make sure that once you have decided on a reference frame, you use the same frame for all your data. To download data click on the 24hr Final Solutions env link and save the output file as a .txt file. Open this data in excel; this should open all the data in one column. To investigate this data, we will need to format it, start by splitting the data into separate columns using the text to columns tool. To split the columns select delimited – select the ‘Space' delimiter – check that all columns are now separated – ensure the column data format for yymmdd column is Date: YMD, and finish. Finally, we will want to be able to filter some selections of the data - to do this select the top column and select filter. Now the column titles should have arrows next to them that allow you to filter the data quickly. Create some plots with the earthquake and deformation data to help you determine the date of the Lower Puna eruptions. 1. Label all plots. 2. Indicate on the plots the date at which you believe the eruption began occurring 3. If you believe that you can see any precursor events label the point at which you would put out an eruption warning 4. Screen shot the geochemical data and indicate the eruption date and potential warning date on this information. What date did you believe the lower Puna eruption began on and what is the data that supports this hypothesis? Are there any precursor events that would have warned you that there was an impending eruption. If so on which date would you have released an eruption warning to the community?
