Description

Write a paper that responds to the questions: What, if any, limits should be set on genetic engineering? Provide justifications for views from the required readings in Chapters 22 and 14.

Please consult the readings in chapter 22, “Genetic Engineering”, for the pro and con perspectives on this issue. Then, choose the article with which you agree most and lead your paper with arguments from that article. Next, counter that article with the views of an opponent. You will do so by critiquing the first article you discussed with arguments from one of the other articles. In addition, supplement one of these articles with one of the readings assigned from chapter 14 on Climate Change. Finally, conclude the essay by responding to the opponent’s arguments with views of your own.

The structure of this paper is a common one for philosophers. Begin with an argument with which you agree, counter it with views of a reasonable opponent. Then, respond with counterarguments to the latter's arguments. You can develop your own ideas in this final counterargument. You may integrate the third article in whichever way you see fit.

You must discuss at least one of these articles attached in chapter 22 (Not So Fast; Gary Comstock, Ethics and Genetically Modified Foods; Stat Shot) in some way in the paper, even if you merely incorporate elements of it into the paragraph on your view.

Format:

Times New Roman, Double Spaced, 12 Point Font, Correctly Cited. At least five references and do not write more than 5 pages.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Genetic engineering
Genetic engineering is a scientific advancement that is prevalent in the current era and
society. With the rise of innovation and invention in science, it is inevitable to alter the human and
plant organisms. Proprietors of genetic engineering such as, (Sadler, et al., 2004) always argue that
genetic engineering aids in enhancing the human DNA and genetic makeup. When an individual’s
natural characteristic is altered, they tend to poses better qualities. However, the limitations of
genetic engineering have also been primarily manifested through genetic defects, failed operations,
acquisition of slightly abnormal physical features and so forth. The aspect of morality and ethics
in altering the human biology has also been put into question. Genetic engineering is a science
which is not natural, and as much as it enhances our general body function, its limitations are far
worse as many scholars argue that it deprives man of his unique inborn talents.
In support of my thesis statement, l would like to base my arguments on Michael Sande’s
Premises. In his article ‘The case against perfection’ retrieved from chapter 22, Sandel argues that
‘the gifted powers of human character and achievements,’ cannot merely be replaced by artificial
enhancements. (Sandel, 2003), further reinstates that, the art of modifying the human DNA is an
action done by a few individuals who are arrogant and want to be in control. Whatever we possess
was naturally given to us, and we have no control over it. This case then begs the question why
alter, things that are beyond your control and not rightfully your possession? Sandel only stresses

that we should uphold humility in whatever we accomplish as the human anatomy is not entirely
the product of our efforts.
Moreover, Sandel criticises parents for their ignorance and pride. Children are supposed to
come as gifts from the almighty and should not be viewed as the projects of their parents. Parents
