Overview: Throughout Theme: Approaches to History, you have been guided through beginning your Project 1: Writing Plan assignment, which you will continue
to work on in Theme 2 and formally submit for completion at the end of Week 4 of the course. This progress check assignment provides you with an important
opportunity to get valuable instructor feedback on the progress you are making and to ensure you are on the right track for your later submission.
Prompt: The first half of Theme: Approaches to History has introduced you to how historians approach choosing research topics regarding historical events and
asking research questions about those topics. After taking some time to explore the research topic samples in Theme: Approaches to History, learning block 1-3
(page 3), and research questions strategies in Theme: Approaches to History, learning block 1-3 (page 2), describe a historical event you have chosen to learn
more about and develop a research question related to that event.
Specifically, in this assignment, you will submit parts of the following elements of your Project 1: Writing Plan for review by your instructor:
In Theme: Approaches to History, learning
block 1-3 (page 3), you worked toward the
following element:
I.
Describe the historical event that you selected. Why is this event significant?
In Theme: Approaches to History, learning
block 1-3 (page 3), you worked toward the
following element:
IV. Based on your review of primary and secondary sources, develop a research question related to the
historical event you selected. In other words, what would you like to know more about?
Please note that the numbering included above directly aligns with the numbering of these elements as they are presented in the Project 1 Guidelines and
Rubric. You will ultimately also need to describe the historical significance of your chosen event and include primary and secondary sources in your final writing
plan with regard to the two elements you have started work on in this assignment, but you do not need to do so in this submission. You will be prompted to build
upon this progress check submission to prepare your final writing plan for submission in Week 4.

QUESTION 1; In the following scenario, which historical lens is being applied? Why do you
think so? The influx of unskilled Irish immigrants into New York City in the 1840s and early
1850s drives down wages for other workers at the low end of the salary ladder.
The historical lens applied in the conclusion that an influx of unskilled immigrants drives
down wages is the economic historical lens. This is because the economic lens discusses issues
involving trade and offering services, jobs, money, and class systems. The issue of immigrant
influx is classified under class systems and the wages and workers is under jobs and money.
QUESTION 2; In the following scenario, which historical lens is being applied? Why do you
think so? In 1908, Aram Pothier, an immigrant from Quebec, is elected governor of Rhode Island
with strong support from the Québécois community.
The lens applied in this scenario is the government historical lens. The government lens
discusses issues that relate to politics, laws and legal issues and powers in the society. The
election of a governor from the Quebecois community is therefore a political issue.
QUESTION 3; In the following scenario, which historical lens is being applied? Why do you
think so? Irish immigrants and first-generation Irish-Americans come to dominate the hierarchy
of the American Catholic Church in the late nineteenth century.
The cultural historical lens is applied in this scenario. The cultural lens involves religion,
gender, race and traditions. The domination of the American Catholic church by the Irish
immigrants involves the religion of these immigrants in history.
QUESTION 4; In the following scenario, which historical lens is being applied? Why do you
think so? Immigration to the United States comes to be seen as a “rite of passage” for young
Québécois women in the early twentieth century.
The historical lens applied in this scenario is the cultural historical lens. Since the cultural
lens covers issues concerning gender, the scenario of the immigration of Quebecois women as a
rite of passage would be rightly covered under the culture lens on gender.
QUESTION 5; Three research questions for a historical analysis essay on the Lincoln
assassination.
1. What kind of protection was Lincoln, as the president, provided around the time of his

2. What was the involvement of the officials who wanted to move Lincoln from Ford's in
his assassination?
3. How was the controversy of Lincoln’s inauguration linked to his eventual assassination?
QUESTION 6; Three research questions for a historical analysis essay on Title IX.

2. What prompted the stipulations of title IX that was against the exclusion of all persons

3. What were the main issues that were highlighted by the advocates of the enactment of
Title IX?
QUESTION 7; Write a research question that addresses the Irish immigrant experience through
the lens of political history
What was the involvement of the Irish immigrants in the big city politics of New York or San
Francisco in the 20th Century?
QUESTION 8; Write a research question that addresses the Irish immigrant experience through
the lens of economic history.
What were the economic provisions that were put in place to make certain that the Irish
