Fri 9/14: Game Session 2

Game Session 2: Assembly, President 2 presiding

Electorate: Should metics and worth slaves be admitted and allowed to vote in the Pnyx? To serve as jurors in the law courts? Principal speakers: Thrasybulus, Archinus, Callias, AristoclesIf anyone wants to debate a second topic, it must be submitted at least a day in advance to allow everyone to prepare. To prepare for this class, review page 69 of the game book, especially the required readings. If you will be giving a major speech, DO RESEARCH—in the game book and in other sources. If you are President #2 or Herald #2, review your duties before class.

Special note: Time is elastic in Reacting. Although only a couple of days may separate Assembly session one and two, in “Athenian time,” perhaps as much as six months will have elapsed between sessions. Only the GameMaster knows for sure how much time has elapsed.

After class: President #2 should post on Blackboard the exact wording of any law or resolution passed in the Second Assembly, including the name(s) of the proposer(s).

Also: If you presented a major speech, be sure to post it on Blackboard by midnight. Indeterminates are required to read everything posted on Blackboard before the next class.

Special note on TRIALS: Because Game Session 4 (September 19) is reserved for Trial Day, any citizen who wishes to bring charges against any one in Athens should approach one or more of the Archons (magistrates). If an Archon thinks that the charges warrant a trial, “he” will ask the GameMaster to commit all (or a portion of) Trial Day to that case. Trial procedures are outlined in the game book, pp. 61-64.

Callias: Speech
Good afternoon, fellow citizens of Athens. It is with great honor that I, Callias, stand before
you on this day; a day that allows us to exercise our rights and responsibilities to the Republic.
Some of you may already know me, as I have been involved in prior proceedings. To those of you
do not, I am the son of a wealthy family, which saw its rise to greater riches through the provision
of slaves for the mining needs of this city. It is due to this increase in wealth that I was able to
reach the position which I now hold, serving you, citizens, and the great city of Athens, as a fellow
citizen and an ambassador. With this in mind, I would like to stand before you today with the intent
of addressing the questions brought up in this session. Questions that, overall, speak to the very
nature of our lives and our society. Athenian democracy prides itself on allowing the cooperation
of its citizens, through their direct participation in these locations, where our opinions, when
majoritary, can dictate how the state operates. This system allows citizens to hear and to be heard
-- a reward, granted to them due to their impeccable service to the state and a responsibility, granted
to them due to the recognition of their ability to make decisions that benefit society.
To the first part of this debate, regarding the right of metics, let us focus on the first
segment. Should metics be allowed the right to vote on the Pnyx? I bring forth a complicated
answer. For the most part, I am aware, that the population of metics in the city of Athens is quite
grand. As the city offers opportunity that few other places could, foreigners will undoubtedly seek
-- as they have already sought -- to come through its gates and settle in its ground. Who here would
not consider doing the same, had they been unfortunate enough to be born in a different land? Who
here would not find enticement in settling unto such a ...
