Mental Illness Stigma
A mental illness, for example depression, schizophrenia or bipolar, is a disease that
causes either mild or severe disturbances in behavior and/ or thought resulting in the inability of
an individual to keep up with the ordinary routines and demands in life (Burger, 2013). Not
much is known except for the many myths accompanying these illnesses and like most of the
individuals, I believe that mental illness is rare, can only happen to other people. Families and
friends are never prepared to live with the fact that their loved one is mentally ill. It is often
emotionally and physically trying and leaves one vulnerable to other’s judgement and opinion.
One of my close friends was recently diagnosed with schizophrenia. She was withdrawn
and had a problem expressing herself socially. Everything looked fine until she expressed her
chain of thoughts. Help was sought from a mental health professional. We focused on her
strengths and ensured she knew that she still had a place in our...
