Founder
Walmart is the largest retailer in the world in terms of revenues and size. The
company was founded by Sam Walton in 1962 as a retailer in Arkansas. In 1969, the
company was officially incorporated as it sought to go public and raise funds necessary for its
continued growth. However, the Walton family has to date maintained its position as the
major shareholder and controller of the company.
Employee count
Walmart is the largest employer in the US and globally as well. Based on data mapped
by the Visual Capitalist, Walmart was the leading employer in 22 states as of 2017 and the
largest employer in the country with its more than 1.5 million employees (Desjardins, 2017).
At 2.3 million employee count, the company is also the largest employer in the world. These
employees primarily serve in the thousands of outlets that the company operates as well as
other businesses including Sam’s Club and the e-commerce segment.
Growth over time
Walmart’s has been growing steadily since its establishment. By 1970s, the company
had steadily expanded into other states through the opening up of new retail facilities and
acquisition of existing ones. While the company had already become the largest retailer in the
US by early 1980s, it was not until the mid-1990s that the company was able to expand its
operations to other Noth American countries and later on in other continents. Walmart
currently operates in all US states and in 28 countries worldwide.
