SOCIAL BEHAVIORS ENHANCED BY DEFENSIBLE SPACE DESIGN
Introduction
Defensible space design entails architectural and structural designs in computer or data
center areas in order to discourage criminal behaviors and enhance neighborhood security. It was
first discovered by Oscar Newman in 1970s (Steventon, 2014). On the other hand, Physical
security entails restriction measures and facilities that are implemented to prevent unauthorized
individuals and events from gaining access to specified facilities, gadgets like computer, and
resources like data in order to protect both the property and personnel from potential harm. The
events may include floods, fire or terrorism.

Social behaviors strengthened by defensible space design
Unlike physical security that entails using hardware, defensible space design entails
incorporating both social and physical elements. The defensible space design aims at strengthening
social control and crime prevention behaviors.

Social restraint
Social restraint entails the internalization of norms and values through the formal or
informal actions. For instance, the data center can have a sign warning that no unauthorized
persons. Individuals will be aware as they have been invoked to keep off. Warnings and other
written labels are commonly used for the purposes of social control (Kingham, 2012). Another
famous label is informing the public that a particular area is under 24 hours CCTV surveillance.
Individuals will be cautious not to do something wrong or illegal as they fear being caught and
punished.

Criminal restraint
Like the social constraint, criminal constraining entails limiting circumstances and
conditions that can enhance criminal behavior or activities. If an area is located near the police
station, individuals will be aware of the police and they will be keen not to be involved in criminal
activity. Further, if individuals visit an organization and find extreme security structures and
facilities, it will resonate in their mind that it is not possible to succeed in doing something bad
within given premises. As a result, the neighborhood and other members will get the same message
and criminal attempts will be diminished. The desire and temptation of criminals will be curtailed
(Kingham, 2012). If criminals identify that they can do harm without being noticed, they will be
tempted to act. If they notice that it is impossible, they are likely to look for alternative survival
tactics like seeking formal employment.

Conclusion
Defensible space design is an effective way of discouraging criminal activities and social
misconduct because it utilizes both physical structures and the human instinct to enhance values
like honesty and respect.
