Introduction
The pre-Islamic period ‘jāhiliyya’ was a period that was filled with ethical and
spiritual ignorance for many Islam’s. Many poets came up to address the issues that were prevalent
in the Islamic society. Poetry acted as a gateway for teaching individuals of what’s wrong ‘haram’
and what’s right ‘halal.’ Before the Quran doctrines were implemented, poetry served as a mirror
to praise good virtues and shun away the vices. The shā‘ir or poet would compose poems that were
aimed at teaching the customs and traditions of the Islamic people. This paper tries to explore the
aspects of the Islamic culture by bringing to light some of the virtues and vices typical to pre
Islamic poems.
