In this activity you are required to describe and categorize different types of mass movements
based on your observations of the video clips posted on eLearn and your knowledge from
reading the textbook and reviewing the lectures.
Learning Objectives
• Describe the key characteristics of different mass movements
• Recognize the variable material composition of mass movements
• Distinguish between key types of mass movements
Instructions
1. Watch each of the short video clips posted on eLearn (weblinks are also provided below).
Make some notes on the mass movement processes you see at work in each case.

The quality of the videos is not perfect, but you should be able to differentiate between the
mass movement types shown. Also, be aware that the media sources posting these videos do
not always accurately identify the mass movement type.
2. Write a short description for each mass movement type that covers the following:
a) Characteristics of the mass movement (e.g. fast/ slow, shallow/deep, etc.)
b) Composition of the materials involved (e.g. rock/ soil, dry/ wet, fine/ coarse, etc.)
Try to be as precise as you can in your description with reference to the different types of
mass movements we have covered in the lecture. (2pts for each description; total 6pts)
3. Classify each of the three mass movement types with reference to the US Geological Survey
typology overleaf and provide a brief rationale for each of your selections. Remember that
some mass movements may show complex patterns combining more than one type. If you
think this is the case in any of the videos shown, then explain the sequence of movements.
Partial marks will be awarded for providing a reasoned justification for your choice even if
you do not correctly identify the mass movement type. (1pt for each type; total 3 pts)
