In the many older cultures, women are treated as properties of their fathers. When a
woman is ready for marriage, it is the responsibility of the groom’s family to pay the bride price
to the bride’s family which is payable regarding material goods. The bride price to be paid
depended on the value of the woman hence it was the responsibility of the bride parents to invest
on their daughter so that she can gain benefit and become more attractive in the marriage market.
The bride will carry with her the dowry into her marriage as it was given in the form of goods.
2. Explain three stages that someone might experience in shifting from traditional customs to
romantic love. Pg 46
As compared to the traditional customs where couples were brought together through
arranged marriage, the romantic love is seen as a process where every individual have a right to
choose. In romantic love, there are stages that individuals undergo before getting married. One of
the differences is that when two people fall in love, they are allowed to be romantically in love
even before they officiate their marriage. Second, it is upon the two individuals to determine if
they are romantically attracted to each other as compared to the traditional way where people
would learn to live together and try to be romantically in love after marriage. Lastly, through
dating, the two individuals get to know if they are compatible to each other and if they are ready
to get into marriage as compared to the traditional arranged marriages where the individuals had
no freedom to turn down their parent’s choice.

One of the elements that relate romantic love to erotic love is the sexual desire towards an
individual when in love, longing to spend time with each other as well as been psychologically
connected intimately. Second, individual happiness revolves around the person they are in love
with and lastly, when two people are likely to hold each other in high regards hence
overestimating each different potential and the importance in the relationship.

Rational romantic love is a process of partner selection that evolved in western societies
