Description

For this assignment, you will identify a current social issue to explore and you will conduct a search of the literature using the UMUC library databases. You will find and summarize five recent articles related to your topic using academic journals and sources from at least three social science disciplines (including anthropology, criminology, economics, gerontology, political science, psychology, public policy, and sociology). Your articles should be no more than 5 to 7 years old.

The research you conduct for this assignment will be incorporated into your Writing Assignment 3 which is due at the end of the term.

Your assignment should be completed on the worksheet provided and should include the following:

  • A detailed statement that identifies a current social issue about which you are interested in learning more. You can find some ideas by searching the Web or by simply listening to the news. Your statement should include an explanation of why the topic interests you.
  • A detailed summary of what makes a source of information credible in the social sciences, as well as examples of sources that would not be considered credible. Be sure to include in-text citations that support your statements.
  • Five article summaries from at least three different social science disciplines including:
    • Reference in APA format –
    • Disciplinary perspective (e.g. anthropology, economics, gerontology, psychology, sociology, etc.) – how do you know? (e.g. title of the journal, credentials of the authors, specific theories mentioned, etc.)
    • How do you know this is a credible source?
    • Summary of the article
      • Research questions and/or hypotheses
      • Description of subjects – who did the researchers study?
      • Basic description of the study design – what did the researchers do?
      • Main findings of the study (don’t worry so much about complicated methods, statistics, and results sections. You’ll learn more about this in your upper level courses)
      • Any limitations of the study

Racial and education inequality
Social disparities affecting different groups of people have led to negative impacts which
not only impact the social domain but affects everything else including political and economic
development. This is an interesting topic that spans around almost every discipline in social
science. Once disparities are observed at an early age during education then one expects least but
to find them in the economic realm during employment and earning. If least is done in the
contribution of this research, then it would be no different from sitting down and watching a
crack widen and until a house falls down. Racial and education inequality has a long historical
legacy making it one of the vital topics in anthropology studies. Previous research on this topic
has led to observable changes in public policies and the history can be traced back in time
especially in the civil rights era. It is an important topic of research due to its economic impact
on the present income gaps. It is imperative to note that the literature review carried out in this
paper for the above-designated topic is pertinent to the United States of America.
In an attempt to ensure quality, the following criteria are used to determine whether the
sources used for the literature review are credible. First, the authors of the sources who have
previously researched on the topic are evaluated to determine whether they have expertise in the
social science field. Affiliation to recognized institutions and their credentials are used to
evaluate whether they are fit to contribute to scholarly work ("Evaluating the Credibility of Your
Sources," 2015). The appropriateness of the sources is also used to determine whether it is a
credible source for the above-named topic of research. Timeliness matters to ensure that the
literature review contained herein is not outdated and thus the sources must have been published
in the recent past. The audience of the articles is also considered to determine the credibility of
the sources since most journals contribute to the larger scientific journals. Therefore, one expects

that the journals will address other scholars in the social sciences docket. It is also important to
cross-check whether the articles are published by acknowledged journal publishers. Some
examples of non-credible sources include majorly online material that is published without a
peer review process. For instance, Wikipedia is an online encyclopedia that contains a lot of
information which can be edited by anyone. Information published on the social media and any
non-peer reviewed articles is also considered to be non-credible ("Examples of Sources...
