Compared to public relations, social media is the new kid on the block. Social media
has been a game changer since the early 2000s thanks to smartphones and platforms such as
Snapchat, Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook. On the other hand, public relation is a stalwart
of the marketing communications world. It has never disappeared. Instead, this discipline has
developed to incorporate social media as a useful communications tool. Currently, several
organizations use social media to gain coverage quickly and get their message to resonate
with new audiences. World Wildlife Fund is an example of an organization that integrated the
social media to raise awareness of the need to protect the most endangered species of wild
animals on the planet.

Founded in September 2011, Snapchat continues to innovate and evolve in such a
manner that keeps the social media industry on its toes. From the practical application of
augmented reality to smart filters and lenses, this social media platform logged more than 1
trillion snaps in the year 2017. This achievement is more than all the images that smartphones
