WAC 107 Reflection Essay Purpose: Reflective essays help us connect intense personal experiences with a larger social meaning; they give us a forum in which to explore the implications of our experiences. Reflection can help us process and filter events in our lives and help us understand our place in the world. This may sound a bit extreme, but if done right, reflection can give us time to process and understand a situation thoroughly. It can also help readers think deeply about the stories you present. Topic: Write your own reflective essay about a situation (or situations) in your life that left a deep impression. The situation does not have to be especially dramatic—the important thing is to choose an experience that makes you think about social values and meanings. Keep in mind that a good reflection involves vivid description of a particular occasion and an exploration of a general subject related to that experience. Prewriting: Pages 175-176 in your textbook offer several ideas for possible reflection subjects, but you should also brainstorm some ideas of your own. Reading the assigned Chapter 5 essays very carefully will also help you get ideas for this assignment. Length/Format: All of your formal papers for this class should have 1” margins, be double-spaced, and be printed in Times New Roman 12 pt. font. I have provided a template in the “Syllabus & Course Info” section of Blackboard to help you with formatting. Your final paper for this assignment should be 3-5 full pages in length, so I ask that you at least make it onto the third page for your draft. The more complete the draft, the better the suggestions your classmates and I will be able to give you for improvement. You do not need any sources for this paper, so please do not use any resources without prior approval. Evaluation: In this paper, I will be expecting two major components: a vivid description of an event that holds significance for you and a reflection on a general subject related to your story. I will expect you to use the skills you have learned in Chapter 5, such as presenting the occasion, developing the reflections, maintaining coherence, and engaging readers. As with all assignments for this class, I expect a highly polished essay that has been carefully organized, edited, proofread, and revised. This assignment is worth 20% of your final semester grade.
