Project Description for Writing Project One
Primary Research Project: Analysis of a Public Space
As we discussed on the first day of class, the purpose of this class is to help you join the
conversation of academic writing. The first step to joining a conversation is to learn to inquire and to
analyze the results of that inquiry. Such an exploration will involve primary research, which, as we
will discuss, requires you to go out into the field and observe your surroundings, document your
observations and any interactions you may have with individuals in that space (such as interviews or
surveys), and develop a concise and coherent analysis that shines a new light on the space in
question. In this analysis, you should prove to your audience why this space is worthy of the careful
consideration and attention you afforded it.
In class, we will be studying some examples of these analyses, including those in chapter 6 of
The World of Writing “Making an Observation.” Based on these readings, this project asks you to
select a public space near or on ASU’s Tempe campus and—based on systematic observation and
documentation—to develop a compelling interpretation of this space and join in a larger conversation
about public and private space.
Your analysis of a public space will be grounded in your observation and interpretation. It will
incorporate the work you will do during this unit to map the space you have selected and to establish
a focus for your analysis.
In developing a focus for your inquiry, you might ask:
• What activities does this space encourage or discourage?
• Who uses this space—why this group of people, and not another group?
• What features of this space strike me? How do they make me feel?
• Why is this space arranged or constructed in this way? What planning might have gone into this
arrangement?
•

•
•
•
•
•
These are the expectations for this project:
The writer introduces and develops a compelling thesis or open question.
The writer effectively sustains purposeful analysis. The writer moves beyond simple
observations, instead using his/her observations to come to a rich and engaging interpretive
perspective about the place. The writer works to convince readers that this perspective is
grounded in careful observations and worth considering.
The writer presents data from his/her own fieldwork. The writer uses details that are carefully
selected, thoughtfully developed, and that contribute significantly to the writer’s analytical
conclusion. The vivid and specific description is engaging for the reader.
The paper is organized according to a series of sequenced claims and subclaims.
The organization adds to the effectiveness of the paper. The writer includes effective structural
cues to help readers to follow the organization of ideas. The introduction is engaging and
appropriate; the conclusion emphasizes the focus and provides closure.
The writer follows the MLA’s basic formatting conventions.
The writer effectively meets the project’s page requirement of 4-5 pages (12pt. Times New
Roman), double-spaced.
The essay is edited and polished to meet the expectations of a college audience.
Due Dates:
• Rough draft: 9/15 before class on BB; Final draft: 9/22 by midnight on BB.
