Abstract
Active Directory is a name service developed by Microsoft for computer networks.
Active directory is a database system which connects individual machines within a certain
network. This means that without Active Directory, computers in a certain organization work as
individual devices running on a similar LAN (Local Area Network). In this case, therefore, each
computer operates as a standalone device with no link to other devices. A server runs the Active
Directory Domain Services called a domain controller. The domain controller authorizes and
authenticates all users in a network by enforcing and assigning security policies and updating
software for all computers. In case a user logs into a device that is part of a domain, AD
examines the passwords submitted and then ascertains if the user is a normal user or a system
administrator. The AD also allows the storage and management of information, provides
authorization mechanisms and set up a framework to employ other services.

Active Directory Components
The commonly known Active Directory Service is Active Directory Domain Service (AD
DS). AD DS consists of Domain Services, Lightweight Directory Services, and Certificate
Services among others that help in ensuring network security (Solomon, 2013). AD DS is the
foundation of every Windows domain network. It helps in the storage of information and data of
all members of a domain. This information includes the users and devices. AD DS also verifies
user credentials and defines user access rights.
A domain controller is usually called into action if a user logs into a computer and
accesses another device across the same network or if one runs a line-of-business into a device.
Lightweight Directory Services (LDS) runs as service on a group of server operating systems
called a Window server (Kent, 2015). AD LDS as it is called shares a collection of source code
(code base) and does the same functions as AD DS. The only difference is that AD LDS does not
require the creation of domains. AD LDS gives a Data Store for the storage of directory data.
Certificate Services, on the other hand, creates, revokes and validates digital certificates for the
internal users of a domain (Tankard, 2016). These certificates are used in the encryption of files,
emails, and network traffic. AD LDS is not encrypted and can be viewed within any network.
This attribute serves as a crucial security measure when using global catalogue servers. Other
Active Directory Components include the following aspects.
Forests, Tree, and Domains
Many organizations tend to believe that AD domain serves as their security boundary.
What most of these organizations don’t recognize is that if a single AD domain is com...
