Companies Shift to Green Power GREEN POWER PARTNER It seems companies truly are shifting to green power. While some critics in the United States see “green power” as an alternative source of energy that is used only by a handful of environmentally conscious companies, many organizations are increasingly tapping this alternative source of power. In contrast to conventional power that includes the com- bustion of fossil fuels (coal, natural gas, and oil) and nuclear fission of uranium, green power refers to renewable energy resources and technologies that produce electricity from solar, wind, geothermal, biogas, and so forth. A major advantage of companies using more green (and less conventional) power sources is that they restore themselves over brief peri- ods of time and do not diminish. Ultimately, companies that use green power are helping the environment by reducing the emissions of greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide. In an effort to encourage organizations to purchase and develop more green power, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency created the voluntary Green Power Partnership (GPP) in 2001. The GPP currently has more than 1,300 partner organizations (Fortune 500 companies, local-state-federal governments, and colleges and universities) that use billions of kilowatt-hours of green power annually. According to a GPP report released on January 25, 2016, the top 10 users of green power include Intel, Microsoft, Kohl's Department Stores, Cisco Systems, Apple, City of Houston, Google, Mars Inc., City of Dallas, and Starbucks. These 10 organizations used approximately 13 billion kilowatt-hours of green power over the pre- vious 12 months. Discussion Questions shifting part/all of its energy consumption from conventional to green power? 1. Knowing that the majority of companies and organizations in the United States rely on conventional energy sources like coal, nat- ural gas, and oil to power their operations, to what extent is the growing use of green power a passing fad or a fundamental shift in energy consumption? Defend your position. 2. Compare and contrast the use of conven- tional (coal, natural gas, and oil) and green energy sources and technologies (wind, solar, geothermal, and biogas). Green Power Written Responses
Written response 1 addressing the extent to which the growing use of green power is viewed as a
passing fad or a fundamental shift in energy consumption.
In the recent months, the business world has made a strong progress in propelling the
revolution of renewable energy. Around 27% of the people believe renewable energy is just a
passing fad that is if a recent survey conducted is anything to go by. From a recent study carried
out by Haven Power, a business electricity supplier, the major hindrance to the successful
adaptation of the long-term green power is the cost to be incurred while procuring the renewable
power. As a matter of fact, 37% of the respondents stated the direct expenditure was a barrier to
business.
Another reason as to why green power is viewed as a passing fad is due to the lack of
support from the government in renewable energy uptake. As argued by Borchers, Duke, and
Parsons (2007), the urge for business corporations to purchase renewables has been dampened by
the abundance of cuts done to subsidies and the feed-in- tariffs, with a combination of the closing
of Renewables Obligation applications (Borchers, Duke & Parsons, 2007).
The other barrier paralyzing the extent of the growing use of green power is the uncertain
circumstances on how the senior management can be indulged into discussions concerning the
sourcing of the clean energy.
It is alarming that a very high percentage of decision makers presently view green power
as a fad amidst these fierce changes to the climate. More actions should be taken to bring out the
several opportunities and advantages that come along with the use of green power in businesses.
Gaining a clear understanding of green power and its benefits may greatly vary from one
