Art as Cultural Narrative Writing Assignment Guidelines Select two works of art in the textbook from chapters 4-21 that convey cultural narratives. Write an essay comparing and contrasting the narrative aspects of the works. Include the title of each work, the artist who created it, and the page number on which it appears in the textbook. Your essay should be at least 750 words (excluding references). Assessment criteria In assessing your writing assignment, we will be looking for evidence that you understand and are able to apply the central concepts that are covered in this lesson — cultural narratives, visual symbols, and contextual information about works of art. The criteria we will use to grade your assignment are: v You thoroughly discuss two works of art from chapters 4-21. Select only two works of art. Two examples, thoroughly analyzed, will better demonstrate an understanding of the concepts covered in the assignment than a larger number of examples that are superficially discussed. v You discuss works from chapters 4-21. Do not select works from chapters 1-3 in the textbook. We are looking for evidence that you understand the concepts in this lesson well enough to apply them to new examples. v Your essay focuses on the narrative aspects of the works you select. Be sure to focus on the narrative, contextual, distinctively cultural character of the stories conveyed by the works — not just their general observable themes. In order to analyze their cultural narratives, you will need background information on the selected works, beyond what you can see just by looking. You should include at least one outside source beyond your textbook and commentaries to support your discussion. Just be sure to cite in MLA style and do not copy someone else’s analysis word for word. Stay focused on cultural narratives. Use background information to provide a context for analyzing the cultural narratives conveyed by the works you select. v You compare and contrast the narrative aspects of the selected works. To compare means to analyze the way the works’ narratives are similar. To contrast means to analyze the way their narratives are different. Comparing and contrasting are easiest if you select works of art with this in mind. For example, you might select works that are similar in content, but they come from different cultures or different time periods. v You use a minimum of five vocabulary words that were introduced in this lesson. This is the same idea as the previous writing assignment. You do not have to use every word that appears in bold type in the commentary and/or textbook, but use at least five of the words to demonstrate that you understand what they mean. For example: “Nude Descending a Staircase, No. 2 shocked audiences with its abstract qualities”. Put your vocabulary in bold text. If you do not bold the text then we will not be able to determine which vocabulary you are targeting in your discussion and you may lose points from your grade. Include a citation for each work of art you select. Please use MLA style. Include citations within the text of the essay as well as in a works references page. Please see the Purdue OWL Handout found in Canvas under the Academic Integrity Folder for information on how to go about doing this properly. v Your essay is at least 750 words and has been checked for spelling and grammar errors. An essay of less than 750 words is unlikely to demonstrate an understanding of the concepts in this lesson. Please understand that this is a minimum and does not include the reference list and does not guarantee an A. Submission of the assignment Submit your assignment to the drop box (for your grading team) for Art as Cultural Narrative. If there are technical difficulties prior to submission you may email the document to your team leader, however only in this instance. Emailing your essay will only prove that you completed it on time, you will still be required to submit your work to the drop box in order for it to be graded unless you have been directed to do otherwise by your Team Leader.
