Think Globally, Act Locally gradual loss of natural water sources A gradual loss of natural sources of water, springs, is a ‘glocal’ issue that can be alleviated by the idea to “think globally, act locally.” In my community, I come to note a series of drying natural springs that had served the community for decades. The precious water sources are slowly wasting away. It is these water sources that collect together with those from other places to provide clean, save and enough water for consumption not only in my community but globally. To some extent, this gradual decline of the water sources has added to the global desertification and the increased water shortages. One drying spring plus another drying spring and another, results to a community without a clean water supply and a replication of this problem in other communities cause a global water shortage. Even as reported on the ScienceDaily website, water scarcity is already affecting every continent with a total of about 1.2 billion people lacking access to clean water.1 The trend is worrying if left unattended to. It is through our local actions that combine with the local actions from other communities that together add to global solutions to this menace. A globally increasing appetite for tree logging, encroachment of forests for more land and cutting of trees of trees without replacement, all of which work towards depriving the earth of its 1 "Water Scarcity." Tree loggers, both legal and illegal, and industries without a clean disposal of wastes are some of the major causes of the decrease in the vegetation cover in the universe and they are thus the number one actors that can if they decide to, help solve the problem. Another primary entity that can help to alleviate the problem are the environmentalist groups. These groups can work independently or in coordination with relevant government entities to educate and sensitize people on the importance of trees to preserving the natural environmental state. With proper education, people will be made aware of the importance of preserving environment and devastating effects of doing the opposite. Such sensitization will have more people made willing to initiate forest reclamation and conservation measures and this will help in resuscitating the dying streams and wells. 2 Bibliography "Water Scarcity."
