Attribution Theory and Performance

Prior to beginning this assignment, be sure to read Chapter 4: Cognition, Learning, and the Environment, and read the article “Extending Attribution Theory: Considering Students’ Perceived Control of the Attribution Process”, the Instructor Guidance, and view the following website The Critical Thinking Community (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. (http://www.criticalthinking.org/).

For this written assignment, you will demonstrate your understanding of attribution theory. In essence, attribution theory states that individuals tend to make sense of (logically prescribe) situations by associating them to self, others, thoughts, feelings, or actions. This theory suggests that learners should consider why they do what they do, and what or who they are giving credit for both the victories and the failures. Further, this theory suggests that if a person believes that they are not good at something, they may attribute their unsuccessful outcomes to external factors, rather than to themselves. In contrast, if individuals have success, they more often may attribute their successes to internal factors.

Using your required resources to support, discuss the following:

  • Describe a time where you feel you have failed and blamed someone else: the teacher, the friend, a loved one. (Failure could be academic, relational, and/or organizational – loss of a job.)
  • Do you believe that you blamed external things to support a more stable version of your own self-image? (In other words, it could not be your mistake). If not, what other reasons might external variables be attributed for our own performance?
  • How do think stability and controllability affect performance attributions, based on our reading this week?
  • Why do you think that self-efficacy plays such a critical role in how we process our learning behaviors?
  • What strategies could be applied to utilize what we know about self-perception and attributions to increase your learning performance in the future? (Minimum of two strategies.)

Suggested template.

The Attribution Theory paper

Attribution Theory and Performance
Introduction
According to the attribution theory, people make sense of results by ascribing them to
particular individuals, feelings, actions or thoughts. In the field of performance, the result can
either be a success or a failure. The attribution theory thus provides an extra point of view for
evaluation through encouraging the students to think about why they tend to do what they do,
why they study efficiently in certain circumstances and not in others (Fishman, & Husman,
2017). In most cases, when people think they are not good at anything, they frequently assign
their unsuccessful repercussions to the external aspects or other's characteristics and deeds like
high stress or the instructor. Conversely, if people deem they prosper at some issues, they
regularly attribute their successful outcomes to the internal aspects or individual acts and traits
such as the learning habits or time management. Therefore, this paper broadly analyses the
perceived learner's control of the attribution process.
An Instance of Attribution Theory and Performance

In the field of performance and attribution theory, there are two kinds of people including
those that believe they have control over everything pertaining their success or failure and those
deeming that they obtain power from the environment. Therefore, here is an example describing
the occasion when I failed and simultaneously blamed a different person for the adverse outcome
supporting my self-image (Fishman, & Husman, 2017).
I was working as a salesperson in the women's Shoe Sales Store. I used to work as per the
business ethics' guidelines, and my priority was customers' satisfaction. Fortunately, after
working for approximately two months, my boss promised to offer me a job promotion and

become the assistant sales manager. Unluckily, I tended not adhering to the time factor. One day,
we went out for lunch with my workmates and eventually upon returning, my boss called me and
immediately denied me the promotion. Instead, I started blaming my colleagues that they seem to
be the cause of my promotion denial.
External locus of control
Regarding this scenario, my locus of control was external, meaning I blamed my
colleagues and not myself for becoming the cause of my promotion denial. For that reason, I
accepted the outside impact for the result and thus perceiving everything near us as par...
