Introduction
Wide Area Networks are computer and telecommunication networks covering a larger
geographical area. It may cover multiple distances across the world and is commonly used by
government agencies, multinational corporations, and organizations with a wide geographical
presence. It connects other smaller networks through the internet using a set of routers and
switches which are connected either through the half mesh or full mesh topologies. Some
organization has their own WAN while others rent. Many WAN are distributed using satellite
links, telephone lines, and fiber optic cables Gilchrist, 2016). Smaller LANs may be connected to
form the internet which is the biggest WAN in the world. Essentially, WAN enables the
organization to operate seamlessly irrespective of their location in the world.
Point-To-Point Protocol
The first protocol used in WAN is the PPP-protocol, also reefed to as the Point-to-Point
Protocol. This protocol refers to several computer networking protocols that standardize
transmission of multiprotocol data over point-to-point links. The main components of the PPP
include a technique of encapsulating multi-protocol datagrams and a Link Control Protocol used
by the WAN to test, configure, and ascertain the data-link connection (Gilchrist, 2016). The third
component of the PP is a group of network control protocols used to ascertain and configure
various network-layer protocols. Point to Point Protocol also channels Internet Protocol (IP) and
data from other network Layer between two notes which are...
