By definition, a paradox is a contradictory statement or proposition which when
investigated may prove to be well founded or true. In team management, leadership is a common
situation. According to Thompson (2014), a leadership paradox occurs when a team needs a
leader but its autonomy of is threatened by the presence of the leader. The paradox is created by
the thought that a team that can guide itself in achieving the set mandate would still need a
leader. If not well managed, leadership paradox results in conflicts between a team and the leader
which could scuffle team efforts. Often, leadership paradox is associated with resistance to
change and role conflict between the team leader and the team in question. When working with
newly formed teams or groups using a participative management system, a leader can encounter
difficulties due to a number of reasons.
According to Quan Li, Zhuolin She, and Baiyin Yang. (2018), lack of trust between the
leader and the team or group is one of the major cause of difficulty. Lack of open communication
across the team and between the leader and the team could be another reason why a leader might
