Fun Creative Title about the Visual Analysis
John William Waterhouse was a British painter who existed in the year (1840-1917).
He was famous for his love of paintings which mainly had women as the key characters and
had lots of literature. One of his famous painting was the John William Waterhouse Lamia
painting. The painting was named lamia and the soldier and was painted in 1905 (Auckland
Art Gallery, 2018) In the painting the woman is kneeling down begging a soldier who is
seated on the floor. One can tell the man is a soldier from his attire, sword, and headgear
beside him. The lady is neatly dressed in a long dress and can be seen begging the man by
holding his hands. One can also tell that the man is furious about his facial appearance. The
lady is called Lamia according to the author.
The painting is one of the many paintings that John submitted for viewing by the
public. According to the author, Lamia was a child and mean eating, demon fuelled
seductress and the husband had discovered her true character at their wedding. Lamia had
been a hypocrite for a long and had eaten her children. She was begging her for forgiveness
after her husband had made the discovery. The essay below looks at the interpretation and
analysis of the picture.
There are several interesting observations that one can notice from the photo. The
painting or picture is probably taken in a forest or a farm that has many trees surrounding it.
It’s probably not daytime since the photo is a little bit dark. Other strange things that can be

noticed include the sword, headgears, the leaves, and a draped snakeskin. However, two
people in the picture stand out from the surrounding environment. The picture mainly focuses
on the two characters. One is dressed in traditional military attire, and from his dressing and
hairstyle, one can tell that he is a man. The lady is easier to identify since she has a dress.

From the painting, one can tell that the author wanted one to identify and interpret the
two main characters. Their dressing, sitting position, facial expression, and positioning of
body parts such as hands speaks volumes. The painter wants his audience to interpret as to
why the lady is kneeling down? Why is she in a long dress? Why her waist, dress, and arm is
wrapped around with a draped snakeskin. The author brings out the lady as a protagonist in
his painting. The gentleman, on the other hand, is the antagonist, he is dressed in military
attire and has some adornments such as headgear and sword. His sitting position which is
above the woman while facing the woman and his facial expression are some of the strange
things.
The woman stands out from the rest and is the protagonist. In the painting, one can
note the use of a draped snakeskin around the lady`s arm and waist. The snakeskin has been
used to symbolize evil character and betrayal. The snakeskin is wrapped around the woman`s
body since she is the evil character in the painting. The use of bright clothes on the woman
which are wrapped up by the snakeskin explains a lot about the woman`s character. The
woman appears to be good but is evil. She is a hypocrite. Her character has made her betray
her husband and turn around and eat her kids. Thus the woman can be described as evil,
murderer or a sheep in a wolves clothing. Due to her character, she is in trouble with her
husband and is forced to kneel down so that she can apologize.
The picture tries to enhance several themes. Some of the themes include marriage,
death, betrayal, love, and forgiveness. Love is the major theme in the scene. From the picture,
one can tell that the two key characters in the picture are deeply in love. The woman`s
affection for the man can be seen when the woman kneels down, faces her husband and holds
his arms to plead for forgiveness. The man is also emotionally attached to the lady, despite
the anger that can be read from his facial expression, he looks like one who is in deep

thoughts. He listens to what the lady tries to tell her despite her mistakes. Thus, the painting
tries to tell a mythology story of love.
Other themes that can be seen in the essay include marriage, death, and forgiveness.
Marriage was a ceremonial act, and the bride and bridegrooms would attend in their best
clothes. Similarly, in the painting, the bride who is a soldier dresses in his military attire. On
his right hand, one can see a sword which was some of the traditional adornments. The lady
is in a long beautiful dress. These were some of the clothes that would be worn during
weddings. Forgiveness and repentance are also enhanced by the painting. The lady is
kneeling down to ask for forgiveness. She is repenting and seems to be confessing her evil
deeds. The husband, on the other hand, seems to be in thoughts about what actions to take
next. To forgive her or leave her alone? These are some of the themes portrayed by the
painting.
The painting may be considered biased and fail to be iconic due to several reasons.
First, the man facing down to see the woman may be criticized by feminists. According to
them, they may argue that the painting encourages men to look down on their women.
Second, the man is branded as a holy person. On the other hand, the lady is portrayed as a
hypocrite and an evil character. Critiques may argue that the painting tries to bring out
women as evil people in the society.

Peer Review Worksheet
Name of Reader: Gabrial
Name of Writer: XXX
Read your neighbor’s paper while doing the tasks below. Remember the habits of mind and
suspend judgement when reading. Keep the five moves in mind when reading and think about
how the writer is bringing each of those moves into play within their essay. Don’t think too
hard.
Noticing/Pointing: Which words, phrases, or passages somehow strike you? Are there any
passages that stick out to you? Write the most prominent ones here.
I think that the thing that sticks out to me the most is that the woman has eaten her children.
That is an interesting topic, for a generic girl at guys feet. You would assume that she is begging
him or being submissive to him.
Center of Gravity: Which part of the essay somehow seems important, resonant, or
generative? This could be what was intended to be the main point or it could be a section that
holds more weight than others. Sometimes the center of gravity is a seemingly minor detail or
example.
“The woman`s affection for the man can be seen when the woman kneels down, faces her
husband and holds his arms to plead for forgiveness.”
5 Moves: List some of the authors repetitions, binaries, or anomalies that you notice within the
piece. Does the author succeed in expanding upon these parts?
The authors repetition is explaining the woman begging on her knees. The anomalies of their
essay is talking about the snake skin wrapped around the woman’s body. The binaries are good
versus evil, and betrayal versus forgiveness. Yes, the author succeeds in expanding upon these
parts.
Summary: Give the paper a creative title based on the content: first a phrase, then one word.
At the Feet of a Man
Plead
What is almost said?
It is almost said that the author thinks that the man will forgive the woman for her acts.
What do you want to hear more about?
I want to hear more about what you think that the situation is, rather than the facts from a
previous story. It needs more of analyzing of the photo, it will help it become a stronger
paper.

Overall Score:
Keeping in mind the rubric for this essay, what are they achieving so far?
They included their five steps, the works cited page, focus on the important details and is in
MLA format.
Likewise, what do they still need to include in their essay?
They need to make sure that it is 1,000 words it is a less and I do not want it to be deducted
from their grade.
Are there any major grammatical mistakes, typos, or formatting issues?
Yes, there are a few. In the heading of your paper, you need to type your last name instead of
it saying, ‘Last Name’. It also needs a title.
Additional comments:
I think that you did a good job on your questions that help form your conclusion about the
photo. The only thing is, I do not think you are supposed to include about the real story, the
idea is to draw up context clues, and try to form an educational analysis about what the
picture is telling the audience. You do give some possibilities though, it’s just suppose to be
like that all throughout the paper. Ending it with information to the strongest theory you
have.
(I am fairly positive how this is suppose to be, please correct me if I am wrong Professor
Nash.)
Hopefully this can help you out!
