Professional Writing Analysis

The writing that I am most interested in is writing done by medical professionals such as doctors and nurses. I am interested in this type of paper because I have decided that in the future I will become a doctor with a specialty in anesthesiology. Anesthesiology is an area of expertise in the field of medicine that specializes in the relief of pain. Pain, in this context, is the discomfort as a result of surgery. Thus anesthesiologists ensure that patients are free from pain before during and after the surgical process (Chu, Larry, et al., 65, 2012). Some of the writings that I will encounter working as an anesthesiologist include pre-anesthetic assessment, medical evaluations, and preoperative evaluations among others. All these writings have are always written by different experts and have different audiences within the medical practice and are written using different tones and writing styles (Foss, 32, 2017).


While working as an anesthesiologist, there are three types of writing that I will encounter whether as the writer or the audience. The three writing styles are descriptive writing, narrative writing, and expository writing. Descriptive writing is where the write seeks to describe the subject of the book using features that other people can see or comprehend. It usually covers the issue in detail and is useful for people that require directions. A nurse, for example, could write a description of how he or she administered medication to a patient and the effects that the drug had on the patient. This description can be used by an anesthesiologist to formulate anesthesia to apply to the patient. An anesthesiologist can also write a descriptive paper detailing how a nurse should know when a patient coming out of surgery needs anesthesia and how to administer it. While working as an anesthesiologist, I will also do writing in both narrative and expository forms. I will write in a descriptive form when I intend to direct a nurse on how and when to administer anesthesia. Narrative writing is used for reporting in all careers where reports are required.


I found out that there are several reasons for writing in the medical field. Three of the writings that will impact me directly are pre-anesthesia assessment, medical evaluations, and preoperative evaluation form. Pre-anesthesia assessment form is writing whose main intention is to collect data from the patient. Data collected from a patient include such things as allergic reactions. This is expository writing because the information in writing is meant to educate the doctors about the patient. Medical evaluation forms may be narrative or descriptive, and they detail the conditions of the patient. The preoperational evaluation form is written to describe the condition of the patient before he or she goes into surgery. This writing may be done by different experts and may be meant for different experts. The writing styles in the preoperational evaluation and pre-anesthesia evaluation forms are written expository and descriptive forms by an anesthesiologist (Taylor, 89, 2017).


Different types of writing in the medical field have their different structure, sound and tone, and audiences. For example, the structure of a preoperative evaluation form is similar to that of a questionnaire and closely resembles a dialogue between a doctor and a patient. It is meant to trigger the memories of a patient to remember illnesses in his or her family and the allergic reactions that may affect the medication given (Taylor, 89, 2017). The primary audiences for this writing are the doctors that should decide which anesthesia to use for surgery. The authors for these writers are also experts in the medical field. The source of data might be different for the different writing done. The tone is somber and without emotions (Taylor, 89, 2017).


In summary, there are different reasons why people write. In the medical profession, however, writing is mainly for passing factual information about patients and their conditions. In most cases, both the audiences and the authors are medical experts meaning that different experts write to other experts while they also read what is written by other experts. The tone of writing is fundamental because it helps the reader to get the emotions involved. In medical writing, the authors are concise and direct to the point and minimize the expression of emotions in writing. This is so that the person reading it can use it to make objective decisions because if subjective decisions are made patients may be harmed. There are also several forms of writing with each serving its purpose. Expository and narrative writing styles are the commonly used in the medical field. The narrative style is also usually used to write a report about a patient or a medical procedure that a patient underwent. While researching this paper, I learned that writing in the medical profession is very important and that no errors can be tolerated because severe injuries or even death of a patient could occur.

Student X Dr. Coaplen English W131 16 September 2018 Lesson Plans For as long as I can remember, my passion has always been living a healthy and fit lifestyle, from riding bikes as a child to running hills and flipping tires as an adult. After longer than a decade of training young athletes and teaching bootcamp classes, along with spinning classes, and powerlifting seminars for teenagers, I realized that being in a class setting was for me. I have decided to pursue a career teaching physical education at the middle school level. Recently I had the opportunity to sit down and speak to a physical education teacher about the writing that takes place in and out of the classroom. She shared with me that written tests, lesson plans, handouts, and student evaluations are examples of writings required of my future job (Stevens). (LIST OF WRITINGS) Lesson plans (SPECIFIC TYPE OF WRITING BEING ANALYZED) are the most substantial piece of writing out of this list, so I chose to take a deeper look into lesson plans. Lesson plans are a detailed step-by-step guide that outlines the teacher’s objectives for what the student will accomplish during the course of the lesson and how they will learn it. Creating lesson plans involves setting goals, developing activities, and determining the materials that will be used. All good lesson plans contain specific components or steps, which can be followed to prepare an exciting and effective lesson plan. When following these steps you want to be sure to choose realistic learning plans, pick exciting topics or learning contexts, know your students’ needs and talents, use a wide range of teaching approaches and methods, select appealing resources, and utilize a fair assessment and evaluation. Using this checklist will help with an informative lesson plan (Cox). After analyzing this type of writing, I believe that the purpose of this writing is to give a detailed outline of the day, the audience is mostly myself but may also include administrators, and the tone is informal, unless my school requires me to submit it to administrators. (THESIS) The purpose of lesson plans is to provide direction for the day because it is a tool I will use to meet the objectives for my class. (TOPIC SENTENCE 1) This will allow me to be a more effective teacher. “Students learn best when they know what they are expected to learn and why” (Cox). (EVIDENCE 1)The physical education teacher I interviewed, Therese Stevens, described it as a blueprint of the day. They are filled with very detailed information, including the objectives, materials needed, procedure, assessment, evaluation, and available modifications (“Aces and Exercise”). (EVIDENCE 2) Lesson plans seem to be the best way to keep on track. The audience of lesson plans will generally be myself because they are a tool for me to organize my class. (TOPIC SENTENCE 2) According to the teacher I interviewed, most schools do not require lesson plans to be submitted to administrators due to the high volume of teachers (Stevens). (EVIDENCE 1) There have been cases of administrators requiring novice teachers to have their lesson plans reviewed. Ultimately, the lesson plan will serve as a tool for me as a teacher; therefore, it will be written with myself in mind as the main audience. Some examples of evidence that the audience is the teacher include questions to ask the students to keep them more engaged, materials needed for the lesson, and the evaluation plan (“Aces and Exercise”). (EVIDENCE 2) These are necessary for the teacher to effectively implement the lesson plan, but not as important for anybody else. The tone of lesson plans is informal because I will generally be the only one reviewing them. While informal, it will also need to be informative. (TOPIC SENTENCE 3) The more detailed information in the lesson plans the more organized I will be as the teacher (Stevens). (EVIDENCE 1)Since I will be the main audience, contractions and abbreviations would be acceptable. However, if it was to be submitted to an administrator there would need to be more attention to grammar and less use of abbreviations to avoid misunderstandings. The form I reviewed was very factual and informative, but it was informal simply for the fact it was written by using more short phrases than full sentences. There were also some incomplete sentences (“Aces and Exercise”). (EVIDENCE 2) NOTE: Each body paragraph stayed on topic, only addressing what the topic sentence stated. In summary, lesson plans will provide an informative, yet informal, outline of the teacher’s day and will serve as a tool by me and/or my administrators to keep my day organized to meet the objectives of the class. (SUMMARY OF EVIDENCE) By spending the time researching writings in my field, I have learned that lesson plans, written assignments, and handouts are a big part of being an educator. Ultimately it is up to my discretion how I will use professional writing in my career as a physical education teacher. Professional Writing Analysis
My choice of career was driven by the desire to make a difference in the society and what
a better way to do that than to pursue medicine by specializing in Anesthesiology. Seeing the
people go through the pain and how the doctors could use their expertise to control it made me
want to pursue anesthesiology. Also, in my childhood, I always admired how the doctors at the
hospitals used to go all their way to save somebody's father, mother or child. The passion grew in
my junior years, and I joined the Red Cross club in our school. In my high school, I was the
assistant in the medical team in our school where my duty was to attend to minor injuries by
offering first aid. During the career day held in my school, I had the opportunity to have a one on
one chat with a medical professor who specializes in anesthesiology. The professor shared with
