COMMERCIAL CONSTRUCTION AND ENGINEERING
ASSIGNMENT 1 – 10 marks
Introduction
Your first assignment serves two purposes. The first is for us to correct your
approach, your English writing and grammar, your presentation and your
referencing so that you will more clearly understand the standard expected for
the second assignment. This will provide you with the potential to achieve a good
mark. The second is to quickly get you engaged in observing methods of
construction with a critical eye so that you actually learn more about the
practical aspects of construction while you study the theoretical aspects, and be
well placed to produce an excellent second assignment.
ASSIGNMENT 1
•
•
•
Locate a construction site for a commercial building – one for which you
get a clear view of the construction from the site boundary fence without
going on to the site. A small commercial building such as a service station
is fine, and a large residential development would also be acceptable
In approximately 300 words, describe the construction approach being
used. For example, a service station might be described as having an office
component constructed of rendered and painted reinforced blockwork on
a reinforced concrete slab with footings system comprising bored piers
and reinforced concrete ground beams and with an awning over the
bowsers framed in structural steel and clad in metal sheeting. You would
then provide more specific details of the project and illustrate your work
with either hand sketches or photographs that give the lecturer an idea of
what you are describing in your work
Do a rough hand sketch of the building you chose (section is probably
best) and indicate the various loads that the building has been designed to
withstand. In no more than 300 words, and with the aid of arrows on your
diagram, describe the path (with reference to specific building
components) by which the various loads are distributed and transferred
to the footings and foundations. It is important that you use correct
terminology when referring to components of the building.
550-600 words in total – 10 points.
PLEASE BE SURE TO CHECK THE
ASSESSMENT MATRIX SO YOU KNOW THE BASIS UPON WHICH THE WORK
WILL BE MARKED. THIS MUST BE INDIVIDUAL WORK.
Please submit your report via i-Learn by 6pm on WEDNESDAY OF WEEK 3.
The service station about 60% completed on the corner of Currumburra Rd and
Cotlew Street.
You
can
see
precast,
structural steel, blockwork
and
glazing.

Help with Ethics assignment
In this course, you have looked at classical ethical theories of utilitarianism, deontology, and virtue ethics. You have also examined different perspectives on ethical issues introduced by relativism, ethical egoism, and emotivism. For this paper, you will apply these theories and perspectives to a current issue, selected from the list of issues below.Choose one of the ethical issues from the list to research and write about. It is recommended that you choose a topic you are familiar with or that you have thought about previously, if possible. For example, you might choose an issue that either worries you or enrages you; you might choose one that you have worked on; or you might choose one that relates to recent events in your community.Possible IssuesCorporate executive compensationCorporate contributions to political campaignsAffirmative actionThe media and its responsibilitiesDomestic surveillanceWhistle blowing in government or in a businessReligion in the workplacePornographyConsumer trackingEthical problems of gamblingProgressive taxation ratesImmigrationWomen’s equalityIn your paper, you will apply the ethical theories and perspectives to the issue that you select. You do not have to use all six, but you should apply at least two ethical theories and at least one ethical perspective in your paper. Make sure that you write primarily on ethical topics and concepts; do not get distracted by doing analyses that apply political, economic, religious, or legal perspectives. Describe, compare, and apply the ethical theories and perspectives to the topics. Explain your analysis of the issue using these theories and perspectives. What are the ethical issues? Where there breaches of ethical behavior? How could each theory help people think about what constitutes virtuous or ethical behavior?Your draft must include at least 5 pages of text plus a title page and a references page. Your draft should include a clear thesis statement that states what you plan to argue. Also include a list of the sources you intend to use. Format your rough draft according to APA style and properly cite and reference all your sources according to APA format. If

VCC Aristotles Metaphysics and Nicomachean Ethics Question
PurposeThe Reading Assignment contains (usually) two questions pertaining to short sections of (usually) primary sources. Primary sources are the original writings of important philosophers, not textbook accounts, summaries, or expert explanations of original writings. (Expert explanations, textbook accounts, etc. are called 'secondary sources.') The primary sources are (usually) provided as links to free online sources. Detailed instructions identify the exact passages to read. Please note that this is NOT a research assignment. You should NOT search for additional information on the text(s) or its author(s) or try to find 'the right answers' to the Reading Assignment Questions. Rather, you should 'struggle' with the text(s) and make sure to answer all parts of the questions completely and thoroughly to the best of your understanding. Your Reading Assignment submission will be checked for plagiarism. See syllabus for plagiarism policy and academic integrity guidelines. The Reading Assignment is due by the due date specified in the course calendar. Late submissions (as marked by Canvas) will result in '0' points for the Reading Assignment. Please read Parts 1 through 3 of Book II of Aristotle's Physics. Parts 1-2 of Book II introduce Aristotle's notion of 'substance' as an entity comprised of 'form' and 'matter.' Part 3 of Book II introduces Aristotle's notion of the 'four causes.'Aristotle: Metaphysics, Book I, Part 1 (Links to an external site.). Please read Part 1 of Book I of Aristotle's Metaphysics. This short passage introduces Aristotle's empiricist epistemology.Aristotle: Nicomachean Ethics, Book I, Parts 1-2 (Links to an external site.). Please read Parts 1-2 in Book I of Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics. Click on the link, and click on Book I. Parts 1-2 of Book I emphasize Aristotle's idea that ethics is a 'practical science' and not - how we understand it today - a subcategory of philosophy (with philosophy itself being a 'theoretical science'). Aristotle: Nicomachean Ethics, Book II, Parts 1, 7-8 (Links to an external site.). Please read Part 1 and Parts 7-8 in Book II of Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics. Click on the link, and click on Book II. Part 1 introduces Aristotle's notion of moral virtue, and Parts 7-8 introduce Aristotle's famous theory of the 'golden mean of moderation.'After careful reflection, please answer the following questions:According to Aristotle in his Metaphysics, what role do the senses play in our knowledge of objects (‘particulars’) in the world? What role does reason play? Please be thorough in your explanation, and please provide concrete examples. In his Nicomachean Ethics, how does Aristotle explain virtue? More specifically, what makes a character trait a good one (a virtue)? (See Part 7, Book II, for Aristotle’s own example of the virtue of courage.) Please be thorough in your explanation, and - based on your best understanding of Aristotle’s theory - please provide (at least) one example of your own (in addition to Aristotle’s).Your response to each question should be about 300 - 400 words in length, but please feel free to be as detailed as you wish. Your responses must be written in full sentences, logically structured, using proper grammar and spelling, and appropriate style. It is recommended that you write out your answers using a word processing program and copy and paste the completed response.
