Unit III Project
Weight: 10% of course grade
Grading Rubric
Due: Tuesday. 09/25/2018 11:59 PM (CST)
Instructions
For this assignment, conduct research on modern fires and legacy fires.
From your research and from concepts in the textbook, compare and contrast a modern fire and a legacy fire. Search for videos of each type of
fire. Include in your discussion a response to the following questions in regard to both the modern and legacy fire
• When is oxidation not combustion?
• When is combustion not oxidation?
• What is the basic mechanism of fire spread?
Summarize your responses in a document that is two pages in length
To supplement your discussion and support your conclusions, you may use information from reputable, reliable journal articles, case studies
scholarly papers, and other sources that you feel are pertinent. All sources used, including the textbook, must be referenced paraphrased and
quoted material must have accompanying citations in proper APA style
The purpose of this assignment is for you to apply the concepts and knowledge you learned in this unit on the surveillance of the stages of fire
in the video. Also, this provides you with the opportunity to use your skills, expertise, and experience to enrich your response.

CC GFP Type of Protein from Jellyfish Flowchart
ou are a newresearch scientist working for Fluorotek a start-up biotechnology companylocatedin El Cajon, CA (900 Rancho Echinoderm Parkway, El Cajon, CA 92019).Having just completed your Ph.D. in biochemistry from UCSD, you are now an expert in expression and purification of novel proteins. About 6 months ago, a Fluorotek research team discovered a new species of starfish in the south Pacific. This starfish produces a green fluorescent protein (GFP) that is concentrated in the skin. Since this GFP is from a species classified in a different Phylum than the original GFP isolated by Tsien, there is hope that this protein may have properties that will give it advantages over the original GFP(see the Bio Techniques article The Quest for New Fluorescent Proteins). Since the starfish was found,Fluorotekscientists have isolated the gene for production of the protein and have inserted itinto a plasmid vector(pGLO)that shouldallow production of significant amounts of the protein for characterization. The company would like to file a patent on this molecule as soon as possible, and your work will be integral to that process. This protein has potential to be usedas a genetically encoded fluorescent label, similar to the proteins that have been isolated from jellyfish and corals. Time is of the essence, as a number of companies are working on similar projects, and without patent protection, the product will be of little value.

BIO 100 Rio Salado Community College Natural Selection of Rabbits Questions
Laboratory Exercise Questions~~1. Simulation Results.a. Briefly describe what your fabric 'meadow' looked like. (1 point)b. Which colors of rabbits were left at the end of your simulation and how many of each color remained? (4 points)c. Why did the results come out the way they did? Explain why all of the colors of rabbits did not end up with the same final numbers in the simulated rabbit population. The explanation here should demonstrate correct understanding of natural selection. (5 points)~~2. Influence of predation on the population size:a. What would have happened to the simulated rabbit population's size if there had been no predation in this simulation? (3 points)b. If we were looking at a real-world rabbit population, what other factors might control the population of the rabbits if no predators had been in the area? (2 points)~~3. Given our simulation rules, if Coyotus predacious and Rabbiticus hopquickus are both nocturnal (so imagine that the simulation was re-done, but this time in a completely dark room), would the specific color of each rabbit play a more important role or a less important role in determining fitness in the rabbit population? Why? (2 points)~~4. Influence of predation on color trait diversity:a. Given our simulation parameters, if hunters trapped all the coyotes, what would happen to the diversity of colors within the surviving rabbit population? (3 points)b. Would all colors of rabbits have equal survival rates? Explain. (3 points)~~5. What is the relationship between the chance to survive and reproduce and the traits an organism possesses? (5 points)~~6. What does it mean to say that "the driving force behind evolution is the environment"? (5 points)~~7. Given our simulation parameters, how would the simulation results differ if just ONE particular color of rabbit was able to produce six offspring in each litter while all of the other colors still only produced three per litter? (5 points)~~8. Given our simulation parameters, how would the simulation results differ if coyotes had learned that all white rabbits tasted bad or made them ill when eaten? How would you expect the rabbit survival results to turn-out? (5 points)~~9. Did any individual rabbit adapt to its environment? (2 points)~~10. How is the idea of individual adaptation different from the biological concept of population adaptation? (5 points)~~11. Give at least three examples of an environmental change that could change which traits are selected for in a population. (6 points)a.b.c.~~12. Given the same simulation starting with 100 rabbits, again with 10 rabbits of each of the 10 original colors and following the same simulation rules. But this time the environment is a yellow-flowered cloth 'meadow.'a. If you followed the same simulation rules, what do you predict that this population would look like after 3 generations? (2 points)b. Explain your answer. (5 points)~~13. Given the same simulation, but this time all 100 starting rabbits are yellow, and in this instance, the 'meadow' is a red cloth.a. If you followed the same simulation rules, what do you predict that this population would look like after 3 generations? (2 points)b. Explain your answer. (5 points)~~14. Imagine that the rabbit population can now undergo sexual reproduction, and that rabbits with a muskier scent are more sexually attractive than rabbits without the scent. How would this affect the characteristics of a population? Explain and justify the reasoning behind this. (5 points)~~15. How does the rate at which a species is able to reproduce impact its ability to evolutionarily adapt by the process of natural selection? Explain your response. (5 points)Application Question~~ 16. How might the information pertaining to evolution by natural selection gained from this lab be useful to you, or how can you apply this knowledge to your everyday life as a non-scientist? The application will be graded according to the rubric below. (20 points)
