Response

Calcium carbide is an intensely flammable compound that is used in the manufacturing of
acetylene gas as well as alternative chemicals essential for welding and steel manufacture.

A chemical explosion killed two individuals and injured two others who were all workers of the
industry in Louisville Kentucky, on March 21, 2011. The two men who died as a result of the
fire had been working there for a long time. Jorge ‘Louie’’ Medina was 56 years old and a father
of nine, a native of Puerto Rico and had worked in the industry for 14 years. The other victim
Steven Nichols 59, had three kids and eight grandchildren, had worked for the plant for 20 years.
