ARTHUR FALL 2018 WRIT 201 Grant Writing Project Assignment Rationale In your ethnographic endeavor, you learned about a community you hope to be a part of and explained characteristics of that community, focusing primarily on values and how people write and operate within those communities. In the analysis, you focused on the writing of those communities, what they mean, and how they help community members accomplish important tasks. With that knowledge, you will step into the role of completing one of those important tasks: grant writing. As many of you learned, grants are essential to virtually all of the professional/research pursuits of your communities. Work does not get done without funding. Using the guidelines of a real-world grant of your choice, you will engage in completing the documentation involved in pursuit of grant funding. Assignment Description and Instructions Step One: Organization and Grant Selection Grants are a step in the research process. Start with a research area or organization that intrigues you. Are you interested in researching the migratory habits of birds in southwest Montana? Are you interested in furthering the research on human DNA? Are you interested in funding a social cause or gaining accessibility to resources for a marginalized population? The first step: Pick a nonprofit organization that interests you, one that you'll represent. Using the resources presented in class as well as searches of your own, you will select a grant that links to a pursuit you may be interested in at some point in your academic or professional career. The grant should be active, though previous grants can be used to model your own writing. Your grant guidelines should be pasted into D2L Discussions before midnight, Monday, Oct. 1. Over the next few days, each student will read through ten grant guidelines (that are posted in Discussions), to gain a broad view of peers' projects. Please post a few sentences comment for each of the 10 grant guideline that you read. Look for the vocabulary of grant applications—you will use some of that language of grants for your project! Comments due by midnight Thursday, Oct. 4. Step Two: Letter of Inquiry (LOI), Project Proposal and Budget Once you identify a grant, everyone will write a letter of inquiry. Some grants call it a letter of intent or a pre-proposal submission. In this letter, you introduce your grant project, why your research project is needed, how the grant you seek will be used to fund your research, and various other organization and motivation information. The letter of inquiry will be written in a business letter format about two pages and certainly no more than two pages long single-spaced and using the grant-seeking organization's using its letterhead or logo. This is due Tuesday, Oct. 9 before midnight, PASTED into D2L Discussions. By Thursday, Oct. 11 you will comment on two other students' letters, making suggestions, offering writing edits and content additions or ingredients. Oct. 16 Project Proposal and Budget due in class (paper version please, one document) 1 1 . page. Ce Announcements Tips for Finding Grant-Giving Organizations Postede.2018 11:47 AM Hello Grant Writers As you seek an appropriate grant for your nonprofit organization, consider using our MSU Lbrary's resources. Thanks to our MSU Library, we have access to the Foundation Directory, which should be accessible just like any our other database - on any campus computer and off-campus with a NetiD login. Additionally, our library has a notebook of Montana grant-giving organizations, Montana foundation directory. You must be in the library to use the notebook. Here's the Library's LbGuide for our class: http://guides.lib.montana.edulgrants and remember, that often, hotlinks don't make the jump out of D2L). JA Weekend Grant Searches Posted Sep 21, 2018 10:00 AM Your grant-seeking nonprofits all sound interesting worthy and hopefully workable for you. As you look through the information about your nonprofit organization, grab the vocabulary it uses about itself, its bio, mission purpose, etc, as discussed in class. Begin a note sheet with either complete sentence, bullet points or a mix of your note-taking style. Bring this to class on Tuesday, Oct. 2 As you seek an appropriate grant, once again, grab the vocabulary you find among grant-funding organizations. The vocabulary will join your note sheet with the vocabulary that provided in class on Thursday, Sept. 27. If you were not in class, its up to you to gather the in-class lecture notes from a classmate. Once you find a grant, please access the requested information for that grant, and look for both the instructions and requested Information, usually organized in several grant sections, and create a word.doc of the grant and upload into Discussions before midnight Oct. 1. The next step is to read and comment, as discussed in class, on 10 other students' grant application materials--any 10 students. It will help you to read most or all the grants that your fellow students post. X Due in Class 9/27 Posted Sep 26, 2018 240 PM mont Somos Online page College wenga library to use the notebook.
