Aaron Copland (1900 - 1990) Piano Quartet (1950) I Adagio serio II Allegro giusto III Non troppo lento Aaron Copland's Piano Quartet was written using twelve-tone composition. In explaining why he chose this method of composition, Copland said 'the Quartet for Piano and Strings seemed like an ideal opportunity(...). I felt able to explore a more abstract and esoteric idiom with chamber music than I could with other types of music(...). (...) composing with all twelve notes of the chromatic scale can give one a feeling of freedom in the formulation of melodic and harmonic ideas. In addition to the fact that there are more notes to work with, taking a different perspective produces material you might not come up with if you were not thinking twelve-tone-wise.' Copland writes of the Quartet (with additional information or explanations in square brackets): In the first movement, Adagio serio, which has been described as "fugal", the (twelve-tone) row is announced in an outright manner at the start of the piece by the violin. The second theme, announced by the cello, is a retrograde (reversed) form of the row. The second movement, Allegro giusto, longest of the three movements, is a fast-moving scherzo with jazz-derived rhythms. In some passages, all of the instruments play high in the treble of their registers (the violin has harmonics (high notes produced by lightly touching the strings) and pizzicati (plucked); in other sections, there are big leaps between the voices. The third movement, Non troppo lento, is in simpler mood. It is in five flats, and is the only movement with a key signature. The form is episodic, with sections loosely based on the original theme. Its beginning resembles the first movement in that it opens with strings alone. In place of the traditional contrasting second theme, I used two motives derived from the series. (The piano with a glassy tone' presents a haunting motif consisting of the first three notes of the twelve-tone row.) A figure which recurs repeatedly on the piano, these three notes happen to form a 'Three Blind Mice' motif. This motif is set against the denser texture of the strings which play 'somewhat impassively and somewhat draggingly'.) Toward the end of the quartet, ten notes of the (twelve-note) series are presented in a figure of descending whole-tone scales in parallel major sixths. The piano writing is at times far above the treble staff and characterised by wide leaps. (Just before the end of the movement, the 'Three Blind Mice' motif appears in the strings and then on the piano as the Quartet draws to a close.) The Piano Quartet ends quietly, pp, morendo (very softly, fading away).

MUSIC PROGRAM - PETITE SUITE

Music Programme - Petite Suite
Claude Debussy conducted Petite Suite in 1889, and it was steered as a piece for
piano four hands which later progressed to become full orchestra after it was recast in 1909.
This piece was first performed to the audience in 1889 by Debussy in conjunction with
Jacques Durand in its original form for pianos. Debussy also did not orchestrate the Petite
Suite as he allowed another young musician to do that work for him known as Henri Bussex
who was a French composer and had vast orchestration skills. Many individuals believe that
Petite Suite is one of the most prolific, appealing and melodic pieces conducted by Debussy
which has prompted the piece to be aligned for brass, harp, and clarinets. The discussion
focuses on providing a music program for the piece Petite Suite piano duet conducted by
Claude Debussy.
After publishing the Petite Suite in its original version as four hands and later it's
transcription to solo piano and violin the piece became renowned to many individuals
especially the French. The Petite Suite was done in four movements namely En Bateau as the
first movement, Cortege second movement, Menuet the third movement and finally the fourth
movement is known as Ballet. All the four movements of Petite Suite also follow a pattern of
three-part A1BA2 with all of them beginning with a title with the suggestion of a dance
inspiration (Schmitz, 2...
